Stellar Conquest
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

SC:ssa on monia erikoisen hyviä puolia, esimerkiksi erikykyiset laivastokomentajat, joiden kyvyt selviävät vasta taistelussa, ja etenkin mahdollisuus itse suunnitella voittamattoman laivastonsa alustyypit.
1988Short and sweet: when Earth's space fleet left the star cluster of Kiffryn's Cats in 2230, two mutually hostile factions were left behind, the capitalist League and the communist-Christian People's Holy Republic. The PHR naturally regards the greedy merchant bloc as a mote in God's eye and declares a holy war. The League has a few years to arm itself before the fighting starts...
That's the basic situation in SSI's Stellar Conquest, which gives one or more players the chance to find out whether their capacity is up to managing everything from colonial policy through production to space battles. The game lets you choose anything from short training scenarios all the way up to a full-length campaign lasting decades. A game turn is a quarter of a year and splits into three phases: the optimal allocation of raw materials and the production of supplies, moving ships and fighting, and a computer-run phase in which, among other things, victory points are calculated.
Stellar Conquest is an extremely interesting game, as space strategy games so often tend to be. Playing with the mouse goes nicely, though not as smoothly as it might. The graphics are functional and clear. SC has many exceptionally good features, for example fleet commanders of varying ability, whose skills only come to light in battle, and above all the chance to design the ship types of your invincible fleet yourself. This really matters, because not even James Kirk would get far in a Sopwith Camel against a Constellation-class starship.
The main negative is that truly hair-raising situations are very few and far between, because the computer doesn't play a particularly creative game but is content to play it safe. And an especially big minus is the muddled manual, which you have to spell your way through many times before dawn starts to break in your brain. The game would also have been improved by the option of creating random star clusters.
In any case, strategy games for the 16-bit machines are more than welcome. While we wait for the ST version of Imperium Galactium, Stellar Conquest is in any case an excellent way to waste many days of a short human life.
