Soldier of Fortune

Oikein, lapset, kaava on vanha tuttu ratkaisu = hypi + pompi + kiipeä + ammu. Onneksi vanhaan kaavaan on pujotettu pari uutta muuttujaa.

Itse asiassa Soldier of Fortune on varsin positiivinen yllätys. Graftgoldin uutukainen on tavanomaista huomattavasti parempi toimintaseikkailu.

1989 KevätGraftgold, who used to slave away for Hewson, now nestles under the shelter of Firebird's wings. As proof that Graftgold is not the same thing as Andrew Braybrook, Firebird has published John Cummings's Soldier of Fortune.

"Fortune will return only once the power source of the Zodiac has been found" tells you pretty precisely what type of game this is. That's right, children, the formula is the good old familiar solution = jump + bounce + climb + shoot. Luckily a couple of new variables have been slipped into the old formula.

The aim is to collect pieces of the Zodiac, which are the key to a happy ending. There's plenty else to collect too, to the player's great delight. The shops sell not only better weapons and new shields but extra lives as well. But where's the money to come from? Money doesn't grow on trees, of course, but there's no point bothering with work, because the money lives in the monsters' tummies. When the host gives up the ghost, the money starts bouncing merrily about, with inflation nibbling away at it on every bounce. Another happy surprise is the sub-games found here and there, which break up the routine nicely.

Soldier of Fortune contains no unprecedentedly splendid graphics, but they won't offend even a more aesthetic eye. As for the sounds, it can be stated that yes, there are some.

In fact, Soldier of Fortune is quite a pleasant surprise. All the pieces add up to a balanced and enjoyable game that doesn't grate on your nerves with artificial pixel-perfect jumping. Graftgold's newcomer is a considerably better than average action adventure.
