Sentinel

1987Tämä arvostelu on omistettu hyvälle ystävälleni Lasse Boeliukselle, ensimmäiselle muttei varmasti viimeiselle Sentinelin uhrille.

Sentinel on eittämättä viiden parhaan pelin joukossa mitä kuusneloseen on ikinä tehty. Miksi?

Sentinelissä muututaan Synthoidiksi, oudoksi robotin kaltaiseksi olioksi.

Ohjelmointi on nerokas.

10.000 kenttää kerralla muistissa, joten jos 100 sentineliä on yksi metrinel on pelissä sata metrineliä kenttiä (1,2 penniä/kenttä).

Grafiikka on todella loistavaa. Se luo tunnun "muualla" olemisesta. Aika ja paikka unohtuvat. Parin sekunnin tauot paikanvaihdoissa tosin vähän haittaavat mutta kaikkeen tottuu. Äänet loistavat poissaolollaan lukuunottamatta muutamaa efektiä. Mukana on suomenkieliset ohjeet, joilla saa suomenkielen opettajan nopeasti ulos. Ikkunasta.

Sentinelissä punnitaan kyky tehdä nopeita päätöksiä paineen alla. Kaiken kaikkiaan Sentinel periaatteessa kuuluisi jokaisen itseäänkunnioittavan pelurin kokoelmiin.

1987This review is dedicated to my good friend Lasse Boelius, Sentinel's first but certainly not last victim. The only sound this poor man still makes is "Sentinel this and Sentinel that and now I'm on level 2352", and after this dreary monologue the Sentinel-playing starts all over again. Sentinel is like a religion to him.

And no wonder, really. I very nearly got caught in the same spiral myself, but Elite saved me. Sentinel is without question one of the five best games ever made for the Commodore 64. Why? Because this is one of those regrettably few games that grab the player by the throat and force them to become part of the world behind the screen.

In Sentinel you become a Synthoid, a strange robot-like being. The Synthoid can only move by creating a new copy of itself and transferring its consciousness into it. The Synthoid can absorb energy from its surroundings and create trees, boulders and Synthoids out of it. The Sentinel, meanwhile, stands on the highest point of the landscape and absorbs all energy greater than a tree, turning it into trees which appear at random around the landscape. The Synthoid has to get high enough for the little rascal to be able to absorb the Sentinel's energy. A boulder is two trees and a Synthoid is three trees. Unclear (even though not a word has been said about Sentries and Meanies)? It all becomes clear in the game.

Sentinel owes nothing to any other game; instead it is a hymn in praise of originality. As a game classic it is fully in the same class as chess, but not as tediously slow-paced. The programming is ingenious.

10,000 levels in memory at once, so if 100 sentinels make one metrinel, the game has a hundred metrinels of levels (1.2 penni per level).

The graphics are truly superb. They create a sense of being "somewhere else". Time and place are forgotten. The couple of seconds' pause each time you change position is a bit of a nuisance, admittedly, but you can get used to anything. The sound is conspicuous by its absence, apart from a few effects. Finnish-language instructions are included, which will get any teacher of Finnish out in no time. Out of the window.

Sentinel puts your ability to make quick decisions under pressure to the test. All in all, Sentinel ought in principle to belong in the collection of every self-respecting gamer. It can't be recommended as a must-buy, though, as it may turn out to be either the beginning of a beautiful friendship or an expensive disappointment. Ideal for people who think computer games are childish.
