Red Storm Rising
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1989 KevätBingo! Kaikuluotain saa heikon kontaktin suunnassa 322. Äänijäljistä päätellen neuvostoaluksia, ja (toivottavasti) se saattue, josta USS Enterprise, Seahawk-luokan hyökkäyssukellusvene lähetettiin napsaisemaan Kiev-luokan lentotukialus. Luotaimet tutkivat saattuetta, kunnes Kiev löytyy. Kurssi muutetaan, jotta kohde saadaan näppärästi yksin ohjusten tielle.
MicroProse on palannut pinnanalaiseen maailmaan, tuloksena jälleen uraauurtava hyökkäyssukellusvenesimulaattori. Silent Servicen veteraanit tulevat yllättymään, kuinka paljon sukellusvenesota on muuttunut.
Vastauksen antaa varsinainen pääpeli eli kolmas maailmansota. Pelaaja suorittaa erilaisia tehtäviä, joissa saavutettu menestys vaikuttaa sodan kulkuun. Epäonnistumisen hinta on hirveä: Venäjän karhu valtaa Vapaan Maailman ja pelaaja löytää itsensä Gulagista kaukaa Siperian aroilta.
Tottakai pakkauksessa on pakollinen satasivuinen manuaali, jonka sisäistäminen on ainoa tapa selvitä kolmannesta maailmansodasta hengissä.
Suositellaan niillekin, joiden mielestä Hunt for Red October oli tylsä.
1989 KevätBingo! The sonar picks up a faint contact on bearing 322. Judging by the sound signatures, Soviet ships, and (hopefully) the very convoy that USS Enterprise, a Seahawk-class attack submarine, was sent to snap a Kiev-class aircraft carrier out of. The sonars comb the convoy until the Kiev turns up. Course is changed so that the target can be neatly lined up alone in the path of the missiles.
Wonder of wonders, everything goes as smoothly as a torpedo out of its tube. An inversion layer keeps the Soviet cruisers from detecting Enterprise until the Tomahawk breaks up the dance of the waves and heads for the doomed ship. Now all that's left is to tiptoe little by little away from the net woven by surface ships, helicopters and other submarines.
MicroProse has returned to the world beneath the surface, and the result is yet another groundbreaking attack submarine simulator. Veterans of Silent Service are going to be surprised at how much submarine warfare has changed.
There are weapons enough to sink a medium-sized warship. Besides Mk-48 remote-guided robot torpedoes, there are Harpoon missiles and Tomahawk cruise missiles. Targets flitting about above the surface come down promptly to Stinger missiles. And that's a joy you get to savour right down to the bottom when the enemies are armed the same way, since the defence systems are anything but watertight. The motto of modern submarine warfare could be "Torpedoing is silver, silence is survival", that's how important a quiet acoustic profile is.
You can choose your own submarine from the entire US range. The simulator includes practice battles in which you can take on various enemy configurations.
But how does RSR tie in with Tom Clancy's book? The answer is provided by the actual main game, namely World War Three. The player carries out various missions, and the success achieved in them affects the course of the war. The price of failure is terrible: the Russian bear conquers the Free World and the player ends up in a Gulag far out on the Siberian steppes.
Naturally the package includes the obligatory hundred-page manual, and taking it all in is the only way to come through World War Three alive. There is even more of the normal Prose sabre-rattling than we're used to, but if it helps produce simulations this good, then by all means. The graphics are on the primitive side, but they do their job.
Once again MicroProse has married realism off to playability and (once again) come up with a milestone of computer entertainment. Recommended even for those who found Hunt for Red October boring.
