Red Storm Rising
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1990 SyksyLos Angeles -luokan taistelusukellusvene etenee hissun kissun inversiokerroksen tuntumassa. 'Kapteeni, kohde on tunnistettu Moskva-luokan lentotukialukseksi, useampi Krivak 2 saattueena. Ongelma on se, ettemme saa kunnon tuliratkaisua torpedoille.' Kalat säikähtävät evättömiksi, kun neljä Tomahawk-risteilyohjusta rikkoo vedenpinnan.
Ja helvetti alkaa. Krivakien aktiiviset sonarit alkavat pyyhkiä ympäristöä ja helikopterit tiputtavat luotainpoijuja USS Enterprisen ympärille. 'Laukaisuääni suunnassa 276, etäisyys 2000 jaardia!' Ilmeisesti sukellusvene. Voihan nenä.
Pitkän odotuksen jälkeen vanha kunnon Red Storm Rising on ilmestynyt 16-bittisiin. Peli perustuu Tom Clancyn hyvään kirjaan Red Storm Rising (suom.
Tuloksena on hermojareviviä hetkiä kaukana pinnan alla.
Grafiikaltaan RSR on animaatiojaksoja lukuunottamatta hyvin karun näköistä mittaristoa. Ergonomia toimii kuitenkin hyvin, verratuna EOA:n 688 Attack Subiin. Tärkeintä on peli, ei grafiikka.
Onhan Red Stormissa puutteitakin.
Kaikesta huolimatta Red Storm Rising on edelleen paras nykysukellusvenesimu, vaikka grafiikanrakastajat sanoisiavat mitä. He ostakoot 688 Attack Subin for all I care.
1990 SyksyA Los Angeles-class attack submarine creeps along on tiptoe near the thermal layer. 'Captain, the target has been identified as a Moskva-class aircraft carrier, with several Krivak 2s as escort. The problem is we can't get a decent firing solution for the torpedoes.' The fish are scared finless as four Tomahawk cruise missiles break the surface.
And all hell breaks loose. The Krivaks' active sonars start sweeping the surroundings and helicopters drop sonobuoys around the USS Enterprise. 'Launch transient bearing 276, range 2000 yards!' A submarine, apparently. Oh, drat.
After a long wait, good old Red Storm Rising has come out on the 16-bit machines. The game is based on Tom Clancy's good book Red Storm Rising (in Finnish, Myrsky nousee), in which a Soviet Union caught in the grip of an oil shortage starts a war with NATO. RSR, though, drops the tanks, the aircraft and the warships alike and concentrates on attack submarines.
Modern submarine warfare is a game of hide-and-seek with death, and completely different from the Second World War's periscope-up, torpedoes-away technique. Silent submarines lie in wait for each other; surface vessels need only a hint and the hunt is on. The result is nerve-shredding moments far beneath the surface.
Graphically, apart from the animation sequences, RSR is a very bare-looking set of instruments. The ergonomics work well, though, compared with EOA's 688 Attack Sub. What matters most is the game, not the graphics.
Red Storm does have its shortcomings, of course. Friendly vessels are missing entirely and the missions repeat themselves. The ST's animation sequences look like they were ported from the Commodore 64, and the Amiga's 64-colour versions aren't much better. The Amiga version does, however, earn plenty of plus points for using extra memory and for its improved effects.
Despite everything, Red Storm Rising is still the best modern submarine sim, whatever the graphics lovers may say. Let them buy 688 Attack Sub for all I care.
