Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. 1987"Saattue horisontissa, herra kapteeni!" U.S.S. Seawolf lipuu hiljaa pinnan alle. "Torpedot irti!" Pintaa rikkoo periskoopin lisäksi vain kolmen metallikalan kuplavana. Seuraava ehdokas merenpinnan alle onkin 3000 tonnin rahtialus, vai onko teräshaukeni seuraava, sillä hävittäjät kääntyvät ja pian seuraa kilpasukellus syvyyspommien kanssa.
Jokainen on joskus pelannut laivanupotusta ruotsintunneilla, mutta nyt voit kokeilla sitä käytännössä. Microprose, Yhdysvaltain johtava ohjelmatalo on jälleen iskenyt markkinoille loistavan simulaattorin, joka tunkeutuu pintaa syvemmälle sukellusveneiden kiehtovaan maailmaan. Komenna sukellusvenettä Tyynellä Merellä, upota japanilaisia laivoja ja yritä olla itse uppoamatta kun japanilaiset maksavat torpedot syvyyspommeilla.
Kaikessa tässä on mukana aitouden maku, sillä Silent Service on toteutettu ennennäkemättömän realistisesti. Lukuun ottamatta ahtaan paikan kammoa ja huonoa ilmaa kaikki, mitä sukellusveneessä on ja mitä sillä voi tehdä, löytyy. Kaikesta huomaa, että asiat on tutkittu pohjaa myöten.
Pelin toteutus on huippuluokkaa. Grafiikka on paitsi selkeää ja nopeaa myös hyvän näköistä. Ääniefektit, vaikkeivät järin ihmeellisiä olekaan, alleviivaavat mukavasti toimintaa. Sonarit, paineen kourissa nariseva runko, japanilaisten laivojen äänet, pohjaan osuva köli, kaikki löytyy.
Ohjeista täytyy antaa erikoiskiitokset, sillä kun ne lukee läpi tietää enemmän sukellusveneistä kuin moni sukellusvene itse. Kielitaidottomille on ydinkohdat käännetty suomeksi. Kaiken kaikkiaan, jolleivat aivosi sijaitse joystick-rakenteessa, on Silent Service erinomainen ostos. Sukella mukaan ja pidä periskooppi korkealla!
1987"Convoy on the horizon, Captain, sir!" The U.S.S. Seawolf glides quietly beneath the surface. "Torpedoes away!" Apart from the periscope, the only thing breaking the surface is the bubble trail of three metal fish. The next candidate for a spot below sea level is a 3000-ton freighter - or is my steel pike next, since the destroyers are turning and soon there will be a diving race with the depth charges.
Everyone has played Battleships at some point in Swedish class, but now you can try it for real. Microprose, the leading software house in the United States, has once again hit the market with a brilliant simulator that goes deeper than the surface into the fascinating world of submarines. Command a submarine in the Pacific, sink Japanese ships and try not to sink yourself when the Japanese pay back the torpedoes with depth charges.
All of this has the taste of authenticity, as Silent Service has been made with unprecedented realism. Apart from claustrophobia and bad air, everything there is in a submarine and everything you can do with one is included. Everything shows that the subject has been researched right down to the bottom.
The game's execution is top class. The graphics are not only clear and fast but good-looking too. The sound effects, though not all that amazing, underline the action nicely. The sonars, the hull creaking in the grip of the pressure, the sounds of the Japanese ships, the keel hitting the bottom - it's all there.
The instructions deserve special praise, because once you've read them through you know more about submarines than many a submarine does. For those without the language skills, the key points have been translated into Finnish. All in all, unless your brain is located inside a joystick, Silent Service is an excellent buy. Dive in and keep your periscope up!
