Powerplay Hockey USA vs. USSR
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1989 KevätElectronic Artsin ohjelmoijapoikaset ovat vieläkin innoissaan vuoden 1980 (!) talviolympialaisista, jolloin USA:n jääkiekkojoukkue voitti olympiakultaa pestyään itänaapurimme punakoneen niukasti. Mikäpä siinä, saahan sana "jääkiekko" minutkin kiekuramakkaran kimppuun ja TV:n ääneen meuhaamaan.
Powerplay on tehty taidolla. Pelaajien kontrollointi on vedetty uusiksi verrattuna tuttuihin ja turvallisiin konsteihin, esim. "kiekkohirmu" joystickin johdon päässä ei ohjaile pelin missään vaiheessa maalivahtia. Lisäksi ilokepin vatkaaminen ei vaikuta pelkästään siihen mieheen, joka sattuu olemaan lähinnä kiekkoa, vaan penkkiurheilija ohjailee koko pelin ajan samaa miestä. On siis täysin mahdollista jäädä keikkumaan ruudun ulkopuolelle odottelemaan puolustajien viskaamaa kiekkoa.
Sääntöihin on kiinnitetty sopivasti huomiota. Kaikki muistanevat klassisen kepinheilutuspelin nimeltä Slap Shot.
1989 KevätThe young programmer lads at Electronic Arts are still all excited about the 1980 (!) Winter Olympics, when the USA's ice hockey team won Olympic gold after narrowly giving our eastern neighbour's Red Machine a scrubbing. Fair enough - the word "ice hockey" gets even me tearing into a coil of sausage and hollering in front of the TV.
Powerplay has been made with skill. The controlling of the players has been redone from scratch compared with the familiar, safe old methods: for example, the "puck fiend" at the end of the joystick lead never controls the goalie at any point in the game. What's more, waggling the joystick doesn't just affect whichever man happens to be nearest the puck; instead the armchair athlete controls the same man for the whole game. So it's entirely possible to be left loitering off-screen, waiting for a puck flung up by the defencemen.
Suitable attention has been paid to the rules. Everyone will probably remember the classic stick-swinging game called Slap Shot. It makes a fine comparison with Powerplay, since both have a nice healthy dose of violence. The referee whistles for offsides, icings and now and then penalties as well. The computer referee turns a fairly blind eye to offsides; it's not at all unusual to be offside by several metres without any reaction from the ref. The machine hands out penalties rather sparingly too, since you can trip opponents into licking the surface of the ice pretty much in peace without anything happening. But if the opposing player blows a fuse, that is, loses his temper and starts whittling away at the tripper's mug, that is, his face, a penalty is close at hand.
Powerplay Hockey hasn't been made too complicated; as it is, it's tremendous fun and doesn't strain the brain too much, and that's the kind of thing I like. In short: the best ice hockey game on the C-64 - so what's keeping the Amiga version?
