Mars Saga

Mars Sagan takaa löytyy vanha tuttu Westwood Associates. Lisäksi Mars Saga on muutenkin harvinaisen pelattava.

Taisteluosuus on erittäin mielenkiintoinen.

1989 KevätWhen hell is full, the dead walk the earth... oops, when the Earth's prisons are full, the prisoners walk on Mars. That is how Australia was settled, and according to Electronic Arts that is how Mars will be settled too.

Mars Saga is a role-playing game which, for a change, is set in the future. The player's ship made a forced landing on Mars and was smashed to pieces, and the money has run out. Homesickness is so bad that the player has no choice but to accept the job on offer and find out why contact with Proscenium, the biggest city on Mars, has been lost. Along the way the player gets acquainted with charming Martian life forms, perhaps more closely than they'd care to. In any case, completing the mission is the only way off this wretched planet.

Behind Mars Saga is our old friend Westwood Associates. For a change, the Saga isn't an Ultima copy, or even a Bard's copy, but a pleasant system that shows your surroundings not only in 3D but also as a handy map. Mars Saga is also unusually playable in other respects. You never have to touch the keyboard and most of the game is in memory all the time, so the disk drive spins unusually seldom.

The player starts the game alone but can recruit more people as the game progresses. Each character can learn skills from 21 different skill groups. The skills range all the way from using various weapons to hacking. Mars Saga even has its own box. The players' stats are shown as bars instead of numbers.

The combat part is extremely interesting. You can leave it entirely to the computer or do the fighting yourself. In tactical combat the characters are given a queue of commands, which they try to carry out as best they can. The fighters are shown from above and animated. Frankly, Mars Saga's combat mechanism is one of the best I've come across.

Mars Saga is a truly excellent role-playing game that doesn't drown the player in a massive heap of options, yet is still varied enough that numbing sameness doesn't start to grate. Suitable for the novice role-player too.
