Cybernoid II - The Revenge

1989 KevätKakkososasta on kysymys, kuten nimikin ilmaisee. Ensimmäiseen Cybernoidiin tutustuin Amiga-versiona, joten on kiinnostavaa vertailla sitä tähän kuusnepan kasettivetoiseen jatkoepisodiin.

Sinänsä hyviä ääniefektejä on tosin liian vähän.

1989 KevätIt's part two we're dealing with, as the name itself says. I got to know the first Cybernoid as the Amiga version, so it's interesting to compare it with this cassette-driven C-64 sequel episode.

The plot blatantly repeats part one: some galactic-law-dodging lads have once again levied their own tax on the Federation's storehouses. As a seasoned professional, the player is sent to give the crooks a hiding and fetch the loot back. To help out there's a joystick-controlled space moped and a heap of weaponry.

The cybernoid flits about the cave system, and you move from one room to the next in a flip of the screen, so no scrolling of any kind. Every room usually holds a more-or-less assorted bunch of antisocial elements: gun turrets, missiles, flying pirate ships, plants, creatures and horrors and other oddities, which are either avoided, destroyed or bypassed. After picking off pirates you can collect the cargo they leave behind. Then you just advance from screen to screen and try to push on towards the next level.

After playing for a little while you notice that usually the only way forward is to come up with a suitable tactic, which usually means choosing the right weapon for the right place. The number keys let you choose from seven different weapons, each with a limited amount of ammunition. Along the way, besides refills, you can also pick up some genuinely extra gadgets, such as a defence ball that circles the ship or a rear gun. Of the more unusual items in the standard armoury, the tracers deserve a mention: they set off crawling along the walls of the room and destroy whatever gizmos get in their way.

Right, and then that comparison with the Amiga Cybernoid. The one made for the C-64 is every bit as nice to play as the Amiga version. The playability doesn't snag, and the graphics, considering the machine, reach a really successful end result - at its best, stuff flies about the screen really nicely, and the stylist responsible for the artistic design wasn't born of yesterday's cybernoid. And the muzak is ordinary 64 muzak, thumping and all. There are, though, too few sound effects, good as they are in themselves.

Cybernoid II is a perfectly respectable, solid action game that is nowhere near as tiresome as it might look from the outside. Suitable as a relaxing snack between meals, and why not for longer spells of play too.
