Cybernoid
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Cybernoid on hämmentävä räiskimispeli.
Yleisesti katsoen Cybernoid on paras vähään aikaan julkaistu shoot'em-up.
1988Space pirates have raided the Federation's depots and made off with valuable minerals, jewels and the latest battle hardware. The Federation has ordered you to recover the goods and take them to the storage depot within a set time. The pirates, however, have activated all of the planet's defence systems (they look mostly like lumpy bogeymen), which have to be destroyed just like the pirates themselves.
The idea of Hewson's shoot-'em-up sounds bad, and at first glance it doesn't even look anything special. After a while, though, you can't easily tear yourself away from the game.
Cybernoid is a baffling blaster. Without the music it might have stayed fairly mediocre, but the music lifts the game to brilliance. Jeroen Tel's incredible tune plays constantly in the background, stopping you from ever leaving the computer. You play Cybernoid almost just to listen to the magnificent music. Even after switching the machine off you often catch yourself whistling the tune.
As such, there is nothing new or special in the game. All the elements are familiar from before, but in the heat of the game you hardly notice. The ship has four different weapons at its disposal, an invisibility field and a seeker. But each of them can only be used for a limited time, except of course the laser.
Stick around long enough and you'll see everything. Even these nothing-new games can sometimes turn out to be something good. The biggest credit, though, goes to the music; in few games is it this mind-shattering. All in all, Cybernoid is the best shoot-'em-up released in quite a while.
