Barbarian II: Dungeon of Drax

Ykkösestä eroten Barbaarin poika on lähinnä toimintaseikkailu. Joka tasolta täytyy kerätä kaksi taikaesinettä, mikäli aikoo selvitä jatkossakin. Niiden lisäksi löytyvät irtopääkallot antavat sankariparille lisäelämän.

Tasot on syytä kartoittaa tai edistys jää haaveeksi. Onneksi tason selvitettyään sille ei tarvitse palata ennen virrankatkaisua. Tarkoitus on tietysti selvitä tasolle neljä, josta Drax löytyy.

Barbarian II on yksinkertaisesti ehkä paras slash'em-up pitkään aikaan. Bonuksena kuittaa erinomaisen pelin ostaja julisteen, jossa poseeraavat Maria Whittaker ja mikä-hänen-nimensä-nyt-onkaan.

1989 KevätDrax - he lives! Barbarian I got plenty of attention, not least thanks to Maria Whittaker's intellectual assets, but mainly because of the jolly violence it contained. And Barbarian II doesn't disappoint: it's sure to be part of the evidence if and when video games start getting censored.

The Equality Ombudsman will get no joy out of Barbarian, since besides the pixel-Conan the player can also choose Princess Mariana. Both possess identical killing skills, although the male swings a terrible axe and the female a more svelte sword. And with these skills you're supposed to make the wizard Drax an ex-Drax.

Even on the C-64 the graphics wipe the floor with the first game. Admittedly the barbarian himself hasn't changed, apart from the axe, but Princess Mariana looks like a woman despite her big pixels. The monsters have nothing to be ashamed of either. Apart from a few little blobs, the monsters are big and nicely animated. The sound effects are excellent and create a lively atmosphere, and the animation is so realistic it almost brings you to tears.

Unlike the first game, Son of Barbarian is more of an action adventure. On every level you have to collect two magic items if you mean to survive further on. On top of those, the stray skulls lying about give our hero pair an extra life.

You'd better map the levels, or progress will remain a pipe dream. Luckily, once you've cleared a level you don't need to go back to it until you switch off. The aim, of course, is to make it to level four, where Drax is to be found.

The actual killing moves have dropped to four. The line-up consists of a crouching strike, a quick kick, a stiff blow to the head and the famous head-lopping stroke. And if those don't help, never fear: there are plenty of fun death effects. The purple lizard snaps up its main meal of the day, the jelly blob churns your tummy into a mess and the loutish worm spits your bones out onto the floor.

In the ST version both the graphics and the animation are considerably better than in Barbarian I. The excellent sound effects are digitised; otherwise the game is identical to the 8-bit version. A pity. A lot of extras could have been crammed into the 16-bit ones.

Barbarian II is quite simply perhaps the best slash'em-up in a long time. As a bonus, the buyer of this excellent game pockets a poster in which Maria Whittaker and what's-their-name-again strike a pose.
