Barbarian

1987"Kurja hyrkanialainen koira, syö miekkani terää", ärisee voittamaton Nicon Barbaari ja taitavalla liikesarjalla iskee vastustajan pään pois hartioilta. Irtopää pompahtelee pitkin kivetystä verta ruiskivan ruumiin lysähtäessä maahan. Ruumiin pois raahaava peikko kyydittää päätä navakalla potkulla. Sairasta mutta hauskaa.

Kolme ruutua uudesta Conanista?

Idea on selvä.

The Barbarian on naivista diskobarbaari-kannestaan huolimatta erinomainen lisä tappelupelien ylilaajaan sarjaan. Monikin haarikka cimmerialaista olutta läikkyi paikallisten barbaarituttavien innostuessa. Kuukauden bittihitti!

1987"Wretched Hyrkanian dog, eat the edge of my sword", growls Nico's invincible Barbarian, and with a deft combination of moves he strikes his opponent's head clean off his shoulders. The loose head goes bouncing along the flagstones as the blood-spurting body slumps to the ground. The goblin dragging the body away sends the head on its way with a hefty kick. Sick but fun.

Three frames from the new Conan? Well no, just a snippet of Barbarian, Palace Software's new release, a rollicking and bloody duelling game. Samurai Trilogy and Highlander did try earlier to swap karate for swords, of course, but they're not worth remembering. Barbarian fights in a whole different weight class.

The idea is simple. The swords of two burly barbarians carve slices off each other, driven by one or two players. Each can take a certain number of hits, but one successful bit of brain surgery cuts off the game (as well) right there.

For the graphics the makers watched Conan films for hours on end, and not in vain. The sixteen moves have room not only for hearty macho sword-waving and ballet-like sword strokes but also for dirty tricks, such as a headbutt, a good hard kick and a fair old trip. All of this is nicely animated, even though the fighters suffer from a mild case of Lego disease.

All in all, the impression is of Conan transplanted onto the screen, though without the speechifying between every sword stroke. The sound effects are good, with their swishing swords and clonk-clonk bouncing heads. I did miss Fist-style grunts, though.

Despite its naive disco-barbarian cover, The Barbarian is an excellent addition to the overstuffed range of fighting games. Many a tankard of Cimmerian ale got spilled as the local barbarian crowd got carried away. Bit hit of the month!
