Arcade Classics
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1989 KevätNykyiset pelit ovat kehittyneempiä kuin uskoisikaan. Aikoinaan, kun Atarin videopelit edustivat kotiviihteen kärkeä, jotkut Netherworldin tapaiset pelit olivat täyttä scifiä. Federation Of Free Tradersista ja Dungeonmasterista puhumattakaan.
Arcade Classics tarjoaa mahdollisuuden kurkistaa tuohon kadotettuun aikaan. Siinä löytyy samasta paketista neljä todella vanhaa peliä. Space Invaders ei liene kenellekään tuntematon, kuten ei myöskään Asteroids. Gravity Wars on tuttu kaikille isomman koneen omistajille. Hännän huippuna on Snakes.
Space Invaders on toteutettu aidolla yksivärigrafiikalla.
Gravity Warsissa on ruudun keskellä aurinko, jonka painovoima aiheuttaa ongelmia kahdelle taistelevalle avaruusalukselle.
1989 KevätToday's games are more advanced than you'd ever believe. Back in the days when Atari's video games were the cutting edge of home entertainment, games like Netherworld were pure sci-fi. Not to mention Federation Of Free Traders and Dungeonmaster.
Arcade Classics offers a chance to peek into that lost era. It packs four really old games into one box. Space Invaders can hardly be unfamiliar to anyone, and nor can Asteroids. Gravity Wars is well known to everyone who owns a bigger machine. Bringing up the rear is Snakes.
Space Invaders has been done with authentic monochrome graphics. The alien horde trickles slowly downwards while the defender, lurking behind the bunkers, thins out their ranks. There has never been a decent version of Asteroids for the C-64, so it was high time this gap was filled. Asteroids successfully looks like its arcade counterpart and, most importantly, plays smoothly. The idea of Asteroids, of course, was to chop anabolic asteroids into ever smaller shreds and pick off UFOs on the side. This version is one of the best, although it loses comfortably to Megaroids, familiar from the ST and the Mac.
Gravity Wars has a sun in the middle of the screen whose gravity causes problems for two battling spaceships. The gravity can be set to several strengths, or even turned right around. The game requires two players.
In Snakes you steer two snakes, the aim being either to eat your opponent out of existence or to cause a collision. And this history lesson, too, requires two pupils.
Every game in Arcade Classics has nostalgic appeal and, lo & behold, a certain amount of playing pleasure too. The only real minus is that Gravity Wars and Snakes won't do much to cheer up the lone gamer. Worth getting if the prehistory of games is a bit hazy for you.
