Afterburner

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Afterburner

No millainen on tulos?

Amiga-versio tuskin lienee erilainen, oletettavasti kuitenkin paremmalla ääniraidalla. Totuushan on että itse sisällön osuus Afterburnerissa on hyvin vähäinen, kiinnostavuus syntyy erikoisefekteistä.

Afterburner on surkea käännös, jota ei suin surminkaan suosittele kenellekään.

1989 KevätHere it is at last: the hit that was hyped hardest ahead of Christmas '88. Afterburner was a hit before the game had even come out; a massive advertising campaign took care of that. So what's the result like?

The game itself is based on a really simple idea. An F-14 fighter hurtles towards the horizon at a terrific speed, blazing away furiously with its cannons. By "painting" oncoming enemies you can get a missile lock and even launch the thing. In an emergency you can flip the plane onto its back and dodge the thickest clusters of missiles. And that's all there is to it.

Afterburner's popularity in the arcades rested entirely on the game's insane speed, its massive graphics and above all the hydraulic seat, which threw the poor player about until well past the point of throwing up, so how does the game fare on home computers?

Of the C-64 version it has to be regretfully said that no no no, the C-64 just doesn't have the resources for a game like this. The poor little machine does give it everything it's got, but the result is not playable. Dodging enemies is down to luck, because the jerky screen update means you don't notice approaching missiles. Strip Afterburner of the seat, the mega-graphics and the unbridled speed, and what's left? Why, the C-64 version, that's what.

So how do the mighty sixteen-bitters fare, especially as the conversion is the handiwork of Argonaut Software, known for the Stargliders? The boys talked up the result in advance and claimed they could produce a near arcade-identical version, but their big talk came back to bite them. The ST version hardly dazzles with breakneck speed, the backgrounds are spartan and there's barely any sound. The Amiga version is unlikely to be any different, though presumably with a better soundtrack. The truth, after all, is that the actual content of Afterburner amounts to very little; the appeal comes from the special effects.

Afterburner is a wretched conversion that I wouldn't recommend to anyone for love nor money.
