F-29 Retaliator
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1991 SyksyF-29 Retaliator

Peli sentään on olemassa.
Toteutuksellisesti F-29 on edustava.
1990 SyksyOcean's first flight simulator is quite promising: it's not often you get to fly a plane that doesn't exist and use weapons that don't exist either. The game, at least, does exist.
Both the F-22 and the F-29 are new-generation stealth fighters capable of supersonic speeds without afterburner. Interesting enough in itself, but the layman is probably more interested in the armament. Apart from the cannon, you see, not a single one of the missiles is likely to be in service today. Of the five air-to-air missiles the most interesting is the Backwinder, a short-range AAM which, as you might guess from the name, zips off backwards. The ranges quoted in the manual, or its other boasts, are not worth paying attention to, though; in the game the missiles feel like something else entirely.
Among the air-to-ground missiles, besides a souped-up version of the familiar Maverick, there are cruise missiles, which set off a merry sea of flame when they hit the target, and missiles that spit out warheads just the thing for wiping out vehicles. Considering that these are supposed to be High-Hi-Tech weapons, they perform rather feebly. According to the manual the cruise missiles' range is over 150 miles, i.e. more than the whole play area, so in practice you make do with just a few miles. Pah!
In terms of execution F-29 is a presentable effort. The fast - if choking as the detail piles up - but well-defined 3D graphics offer every possible show-off and cockpit view, right down to a missile's-eye view. The minus points come pouring in, though, for the short draw distance: even an island-sized lump only gets drawn on screen from a few kilometres away. The sound side is quite OK too, if run-of-the-mill. Four theatres of operations and a mission count hovering somewhere around a hundred give more than enough value for money.
Retaliator's biggest problem was bugs. Three Amiga versions obtained from different sources were full of these cheeky little rascals, which pretty well killed any desire to play. The ST version was already bug-free enough, and I hear a new, identical Amiga version has come out too. The easiest way to recognise the bug-free version is that you are not forced to update the pilot log, or else by the lock-on markers that appear on ground targets. Another bonus is the freedom to use the second disk.
The manual deserves a mention, mainly because it is bloody awful and was evidently written before the game was finished, since the box contains a correction supplement and the game itself one more supplement on top.
Of existing sims, F-29 Retaliator mostly brings Bomber to mind, mainly because it too is aimed at fans of fairly easy sims. The serious flyer will get some fun out of it as well, but the sloppiness in the details gets on your nerves. Then again, Retaliator also has plenty of solid effort in it, so it does come out on the plus side.
