WWF Wrestling

1988Maailma on täynnä kehnosti toteutettuja amerikkalaisia vapaapainipelejä. Nyt on pulpahtanut esille taas yksi. Mutta voisiko olla mahdollista, että joku joskus julkaisisi tasokkaan sellaisen?

Jostain kumman syystä vastaus on myönteinen. WWF Wrestling poikkeaa jo idealtaan muista, ei raakaa toimintaa, vaan enemmän strategiaa vaativaa.

Tavallista välkympänä hetkenään jollekulle on kirkastunut ajatus, ettei paini välttämättä olekaan toimintaa, pikku-ukkoja juoksentelemassa kentällä. Toiminta on korvattu digitoiduilla kuvilla.

Pelaaminen on kuitenkin helppoa. Ruudun molemmissa reunoissa on suorakulmaiset laatikot, joissa on runsaasti tekstiä. Niissä on mainittu liikkeet, joita painijat voivat tehdä.

Valitettavasti toteutuksessa olisi kuitenkin hiukan toivomisen varaa.

Voiko Randy 'Macho Man' Savage päihittää Hulk Hoganin mestaruussarjan ottelussa? (Ei, se pupu ei osaa painia. Pelissä ei tietenkään ole Andrew 'the Giantia', toim. huom.).

Painipelien sarjassa WWFW on ehdottomasti paras. Tämän hetken urheilupeleistä kai toiseksi parhain, Hat Trick on voittamaton!

1988The world is full of badly made American pro wrestling games. Now yet another one has popped up. But could it be possible that someone, some day, might release a decent one?

For some odd reason the answer is yes. WWF Wrestling differs from the others in its very concept: not raw action, but something that calls for more strategy.

In a brighter-than-usual moment it has dawned on somebody that wrestling doesn't necessarily have to be action, little men running around the field. The action has been replaced with digitised pictures.

Playing it is easy, though. On both edges of the screen there are rectangular boxes with plenty of text in them. They list the moves the wrestlers can make. The two fighters naturally have different repertoires of moves. The players choose the move they want, after which the computer works out whose move was better in that particular situation and announces it. The consequences can be seen in the digitised pictures.

Unfortunately, though, the execution leaves a little to be desired. The digi-pictures have an unfortunate amount of fuzz in them, and the rest of the screen hasn't been spared from bugs either. They're at their worst, though, in the interview before the start of the match, where a nasty line crackles across the pictures. That doesn't get in the way of playing, though. As far as sound goes WWFW is nothing special; mostly you hear the hiss of the crowd and the beeps of selecting a move.

Can Randy 'Macho Man' Savage beat Hulk Hogan in a championship bout? (No, that bunny can't wrestle. Of course the game doesn't have Andrew 'the Giant', Ed.).

In the wrestling game division WWFW is definitely the best. Of the current sports games probably the second best, Hat Trick is unbeatable!
