Winter Olympics '88
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1988liiihanaa. Taas urheilupeli.
Pof.
Realistisuutta, realistisuutta...
Surkeaa, surkeaa. Miksi, miksi joku tekee tälläistä? Hyviä pelejä on vähän, kohtalaisia useampia. Amen.
1988Loooovely. Another sports game.
Pfft. This time the events are ski jumping, downhill, biathlon, slalom and bobsleigh. It's not as if these very same events have already been played in who knows how many games before. Why can't somebody who absolutely has to make a winter sports game pick some new events? Like lighting a cigarette with a match in an icy gale without mittens, thawing frozen beer, swimming in a hole in the ice, rolling in the snowdrifts, slipping and sliding on the ice, or whatever.
If the events were well done, something might still have been salvaged. But no: something's out of whack, and badly at that. The ski jump does take a new viewpoint, from the top of the tower behind the jumper, but something is badly wrong with the way down. Realism, realism... I don't believe any jumper can build up so much speed that, gliding through the air, they drop only half a metre or so over a hundred metres... Or that there's a landing slope anywhere that horizontal.
Pretty much the same with the biathlon. Most surprising of all, it's an identical copy of the biathlon in Winter Games. Only made worse. Realism. Shouldn't you go faster downhill than uphill, or what?
Slalom. Realism. Even if you slam full tilt into the side edge, nothing happens. The skier just straightens up and heads straight downhill. And you can't even crash into the flags. The downhill at least has some feel to it, and it's the only event where nothing really does your head in.
By far the second-best thing in the game is the graphics, which are close to top class. The music also deserves praise, being different in every event. The downhill has really good music, which is in fact the best thing the game has to offer. But of course it's not worth buying this just for that one tune.
Wretched, wretched. Why, oh why does anybody make something like this? Good games are few, decent ones rather more numerous. But this. No! When the loading times are as horrendously long as they are on top of everything, all you're left with is bad memories and badly slept nights. At any moment a nightmare may strike in which you've been forced to play WO 88. And once you've played all the events you can't even start over; the whole lot of junk has to be loaded again from the very beginning. Not that anybody would ever do such a thing, would they? May the Great Heavenly Cracker protect me from games like this for evermore. Amen.
