Wizard's Crown
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1988500 vuotta sitten taikurien veljeskunta hallitsi tätä maata viisaasti ja oikeamielisesti. Arghanin kaupungista, jossa he asuivat, löytyi koko maailman suurin kauneus ja viisaus.
Seikkailu tapahtuu kahdeksan hengen ryhmällä, johon kuuluu kunnon roolipelien tapaan sotureita, taikureita, pappeja jne. Pelissä on mukana vakioryhmä, mutta luonnollisesti on mahdollista koota itse omat henkilönsä.
Tietysti tämänkaltaisessa 'roolipelissä' on taisteltava monenmoisia hirvityksiä vastaan.
Kerrallaan kone lataa yhden karttaruudullisen, jonka koko on kolmisen kuvaruudullista.
Poikkeuksellisesti kartta täyttää WC:ssa koko ruudun.
1988500 years ago a brotherhood of wizards ruled this land wisely and justly. The city of Arghan, where they lived, held the greatest beauty and wisdom in the whole world. In Arghan, too, was kept the Ruler's Crown, the source of learning and of all that is past, present and future. But Tarmon, the Wizard of Thunder, took the Crown. War broke out among the wizards. Sorcery summoned monsters onto the earth, and great fires destroyed Arghan. But the Crown still remains. You must bring it back.
The task is not an easy one. The adventure is undertaken by a party of eight, which, as befits a proper role-playing game, includes warriors, wizards, priests and so on. The game comes with a ready-made party, but naturally you can also put together your own characters.
Of course, in a 'role-playing game' of this kind you have to fight all manner of horrors. There are two options for combat: you can let the computer handle the whole business, in which case the fight is over in ten seconds. Or you can conduct the battle yourself, in which case it takes 5-30 minutes. Inevitably there are some differences between the two, or else nobody would use the longer form of combat. When the computer handles the combat, it doesn't use magic items or the spells they contain.
And what about the playing area? It's extensive, to say the least. The machine loads one map section at a time, each about three screens' worth in size. And there are at least eight sections to load. Here and there are 'dungeons' that you can go and poke around in. Early in the game, though, it pays to comb the town back and forth and clear it of bandits in the hope of a reward.
Unusually, in WC the map fills the whole screen. When you bring up the characters' status, the map has to make way. So the makers have allowed no compromises whatsoever. Either the map or text filling the whole screen. No hybrids, as in the various instalments of Phantasie.
All actions are carried out from the keyboard. No other kind of option could even come into question. A mix of joystick and keys would only slow down play.
Moving around as such doesn't take many keys, but in the dungeons and in combat you run yourself it takes quite a few. The program is helpful in the sense that it tells you which actions each character can perform in each situation.
The game's graphical qualities are downright knockout. Compared to the spartan Ultimas, WC's graphics really are top class. The dungeons could still do with a little improvement, though. There's practically no sound in the game. In combat you hear a few meagre sounds.
WC is among the very top role-playing games, and my own opinion is that it's one of the best games on the C-64, if not the best. And if I had to choose between the Ultimas and WC, the latter would win.
