Caveman Ugh!Lympics
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1989 KevätSarjassamme kaikenkarvaisia urheilupelejä näemme nyt osan kivikausi. Sitä mitä Epyx aloitti Summer Gamesilla on moni jo jatkanut omilla olympiapeleillään. Caveman Ugh!Lympics on Electronic Artsin versio aiheesta.
Ugh!Lympicsissä kivikautiset luolamiehet ottavat mittaa toisistaan lajeinaan kaverinheitto, tiikeriä-pakoon-juoksu, tulen tekeminen, kaverin pamputtaminen, dinosaurusajot ja dinosauruksen yli hyppääminen. Valittavana on normaaliin tapaan 1-6 erilaista pelaajaa ja harjoittelumahdollisuus. Yhteistä kaikille lajeille on joystickin suuri kulumisprosentti ja äh-puh-äännähdykset.
Olympialaiset alkavat kaverinheitolla.
Tulentekemisen taito on tärkeä.
Liika turbon käyttö saattaa kuitenkin aiheuttaa saurukselle kuoleman.
Suosittelen kuitenkin testaamista ennen ostoaikeita.
1989 KevätIn our series on sports games of every stripe, we now present the Stone Age episode. What Epyx started with Summer Games, many have since carried on with Olympic games of their own. Caveman Ugh!Lympics is Electronic Arts' take on the subject.
In Ugh!Lympics, Stone Age cavemen measure themselves against each other in the events of mate-tossing, running-away-from-a-tiger, fire-making, bludgeoning your mate, dinosaur racing and jumping over a dinosaur. As usual, you can choose from 1-6 different players, and there's a practice option. What all the events have in common is a high rate of joystick wear and huff-puff grunting.
The Olympics open with mate-tossing. In this event you try to fling your neighbour off to the back of beyond by waggling the stick faster and faster, which is naturally extremely tiring. The next event is the tiger run, in which only the very fastest escape being eaten. The screen is split in two, with the players shown in one half and the tiger in the other. You can try tripping your pal so that the tiger doesn't go without its lunch. And once again the joystick gets waggled ever so thoroughly from left to right.
The art of making fire is important. In this event you rub two pieces of wood together and blow on a pile of leaves when sparks appear. Now and then you can whack your rival over the head with a club if they seem to be getting too far ahead. And this activity carries on into the next event too. The club fight is in fact the most fun event of all. Two Neanderthals stand on a high slab of rock and try to knock each other out cold. You can fool your opponent by pointing at the sky and saying "look, a bird"...
In the dinosaur race the competitors sit on top of a dinosaur and waggle the stick to get the saurus moving. Along the way you come across rivers and rocks that have to be jumped over. Knight Rider-style, the saurus also has a turbo boost, which is activated by patting the saurus gently on the head with a club. Too much use of the turbo can, however, be the death of the saurus.
The last and hardest event is the forerunner of the pole vault, the dinosaur vault. The player tries to jump over as tall a saurus as possible by taking a hard run-up. Once again it's the wrist joints that take a beating. A failed jump guarantees a well-fed dinosaur.
Well, yeah, it's quite fun, I suppose. It's just that there have been a whole lot of sports games on offer. I for one am slowly getting fed up with all these stick-waggling games. The graphics in Ugh!Lympics are big and clear, in places even delightfully funny. You could actually see the game as some kind of send-up of Epyx's Olympic games, especially judging by the intro demo. The music grates and is generally awful, but then I don't expect anything else from an American game.
There's nothing to fault in the technical implementation of Ugh!Lympics. Joystick movements always get an instant response, and the programming is precise in other respects too. I do still recommend trying it out before you think of buying.
