Winter Games
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1987Epyx jatkaa urheilupelien sarjaa tuomalla markkinoille Winter Gamesin.
Winter Games sisältää 7 lajia, jotka ovat freestyle-hyppy, ampumahiihto, pikaluistelu, kuvioluistelu, vapaaluistelu, mäkihyppy ja kelkkailu. Kuten listasta käy ilmi, on Winter Games luistelupainotteinen. Ja nämä lajit ovat vielä heikkotasoisia. Loput lajit ovatkin sitten aivan kelvollisia.
Freestyle-hypyssä mies hyppää hyppyriltä koettaen saada mahdollisimman monta ja vaikeaa liikettä suoritettua ennen maahantuloa.
Ampumahiihdossa pitää ohjainta heiluttaa hiihtotahdissa. Ammunnassa ase pitää ensin ladata. Kuvaruudussa liikkuu koko ajan tähtäin, ja laukaisu tapahtuu nappia painamalla. Ammunta on tehty liian helpoksi laittamalla tähtäin liikkumaan koko ajan taulun yli.
Mäkihyppy on ehkä paras Winter Gamesin lajeista. Siinä on aluksi ponnisteltava oikealla hetkellä hyppyrinnokalta. Sen jälkeen on huolehdittava hyppääjän asennon pysymisestä oikeana. Mitä enemmän hyppääjä heiluu, sen huonommat ovat tyylipisteet. Myös hypyn pituus lyhenee, jos ilmalento ei ole tasapainoinen.
Kelkkailussa pelaaja ohjaa kelkkaa oikealle ja vasemmalle. Tarkoituksena on pysyä radan sisällä, mutta kuitenkin mutkissa mahdollisimman ylhäällä, jotta vauhti pysyisi kovana.
Winter Games on kokonaisuutena hyvin koottu peli. Pelin grafiikka, musiikit ja muut äänitehosteet ovat huippuluokkaa. Winter Games jättää kumminkin jonkunlaisen tusinatavaran tunnun.

Winter Games contains 7 events: freestyle jumping, biathlon, speed skating, figure skating, free skating, ski jumping and bobsledding. As the list makes clear, Winter Games is heavy on skating. And to top it off, those are the weak events. The rest of the events, then, are perfectly decent.
In the freestyle jump a man leaps off a ramp, trying to get as many moves done as possible, and as difficult ones as possible, before he lands.
In the biathlon you have to waggle the joystick in time with the skiing. For the shooting, the rifle has to be loaded first. A sight moves around the screen the whole time, and you fire by pressing the button. The shooting has been made too easy by having the sight keep moving across the target the whole time.
Ski jumping is perhaps the best of Winter Games' events. First you have to push off from the lip of the jump at the right moment. After that you have to make sure the jumper holds the correct position. The more the jumper wobbles, the worse the style points. The jump also gets shorter if the flight isn't balanced.
In the bobsled the player steers the sled right and left. The idea is to stay inside the track, but still ride as high as possible in the bends so that the speed stays up.
As a whole, Winter Games is a well put together game. The graphics, the music and the other sound effects are top class. Even so, Winter Games leaves a sort of run-of-the-mill feeling.
