Trantor - The Last Stormtrooper

1988Go! on U.S. Trantor on ensimmäinen Go!:n julkaisema peli, joten hauska nähdä miten todellisuus korreloi ylisanojen kanssa.

Klassisesti tässä vaiheessa kerrotaan pelin juoni, joten täältä pesee. Trantoria on petetty. Aseenaan Trantorilla on liekinheitin, jota saa latailtua rakennuksessa.

Grafiikka on varsin hyvää.

Jos Trantor-The (Hopefully) Last Stormtrooper on tyypillinen näyte koko Go!-sarjan tasosta, ei ole vaikea keksiä hyppyosoitetta Go!to -käskylle. Vihjeeksi voin kertoa että siellä ei palella.

1988Go! is U.S. Gold's new label, which concentrates on making brilliant, really cool and original games, as the advert says. Trantor is the first game released by Go!, so it'll be fun to see how reality correlates with the superlatives.

Classically, this is the point where the plot of the game gets told, so here goes. Trantor has been betrayed. He is stuck on a hostile planet and will stay there, too, unless he manages to activate the planet's main computer, which is located in the planet's computer building. For a weapon Trantor has a flamethrower, which can be topped up inside the building. Every minute and a half Trantor also has to find a terminal that neutralises the bomb implanted in him.

The graphics are pretty good. The somewhat stiffly animated Trantor is a third of the screen tall, and the backgrounds range from good to a bit better. The enemies are those same surreal blobs that English programmers have been going in for since the dawn of time. The sounds are non-irritating, except for the track "The Fight" by a band called Resistor on the flip side of the cassette, which is typical teenage metal.

And that's where the good points end, because as a game Trantor is abysmally lousy. The stiff Trantor runs along corridors trying to shoot the swarm of sprites coming at him, which quite rarely ends up in the flames of the flamethrower jutting out in front of him. Every now and then you take a lift to another floor, and so on and so on... The whole idea of the game is old and tired, and the execution is poor, with the ingredient called 'playability' conspicuous by its absence.

I won't be playing this again of my own free will.

If Trantor-The (Hopefully) Last Stormtrooper is a typical sample of the standard of the whole Go! range, it's not hard to come up with a jump address for the Go!to command. As a hint, I can tell you that nobody feels the cold there.
