Thundercross
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1988Thundercross on vasemmalle scrollaava pumpum-peli.
Grafiikatkin on varmaan suunnitellut naapurin koira. Yök.
1988Thundercross is a left-scrolling bang-bang game. The player is at the controls of the Thudercross spaceship, and the idea, naturally, is shoot or be shot.
The ship can fire a monstrous number of shots at a time in eight directions. In the first part of the game you break up character graphics that leap in your face out in space. A jerky starfield rolls along in the background.
Once you've blasted enough, you reach a Uridium-style mothership. Mind you, Uridium only comes to mind because of the scrolling direction. The screen is scrolled one character at a time every other raster frame, so the judder gives you a headache.
The pots on the mothership have to be shot to smithereens. The pots shoot back nastily, and when your shield runs out, so does the game. If you manage to dodge the bullets, you soon come up against walls you can't tell apart from the terrain, and the blasting has to start all over again.
You can't stand watching Thundercross for very long. Playing it is really monotonous and nerve-grating. The title tunes do at least have digitised drums (I'd assume those were cadged from Martin Galway too). As for the graphics, they were probably designed by the neighbour's dog. Yuck.
