Star Trek: The Rebel Universe
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Arvostelijan lokikirja, tähtipäiväys 1988: Enterprise on komennettu Karanteenialueelle, jossa sillä on viisi vuotta aikaa kukistaa kapina.
Star Trekin tekninen toteutus on ihailtavaa. Grafiikka on upeaa (suurimmaksi osaksi), pelisysteemi on helppokäyttöinen ja miellyttävä ja Star Trekistä peräisin olevat digitoidut kommentit lisäävät pelin viehätystä. 'Beam me up, Scotty' tosin loisti poissaolollaan.
Siinä on ikuinen megapeli.
Nirk out.
1988When I was little, my grandfather told me his own grandfather had told him that Firebird was going to release a true megagame called Star Trek.
Now that this wonder has finally arrived after countless delays and false alarms, is it any wonder I expect a lot from the game? But how does it turn out? Will the faithful Trekkie once again have to swallow a pint of bitter disappointment?
Reviewer's log, stardate 1988: The Enterprise has been ordered to the Quarantine Zone, where it has five years to crush a rebellion. The moment the Enterprise arrives in the zone, it is sealed off by the Klein Sphere, which no force can break. If the Enterprise fails, it will remain a prisoner of the Klein Sphere for all eternity, along with hundreds of planets.
Star Trek's technical execution is admirable. The graphics are superb (for the most part), the game system is easy to use and pleasant, and the digitised comments taken from Star Trek add to the game's charm. 'Beam me up, Scotty' was, however, conspicuous by its absence.
The Enterprise can visit hundreds of planets, and to some of them you can send a landing party, which has to face all sorts of little puzzles. Every now and then you clash with Klingons and Romulans as well as Federation ships that have turned rebel.
Everything you need, and a bit more besides, is explained in the manual, without which you won't really get anywhere with the game.
But but: Star Trek doesn't have the makings of a megagame. The player hasn't been left enough room for self-expression. Some of the puzzles met on planet surfaces are solved by trial and error, and that isn't much fun. In combat the player's entertainment consists of picking a target and firing at the right moment. Star Trek does still have its good sides, but it would have paid to study something like Elite closely before making this game. Now there's a megagame for all eternity.
I fear the worst: the upcoming home micro versions won't turn out even as well as this ST version. And ST owners would do well to try the game before buying. Good but not mega. Nirk out.
