1990 KevätAmigalle tuntuu löytyvän joukko Star Trek -pelejä PD-levyillä. Olen nähnyt pari jenkkiviritystä, jotka käyttävät useampaa levyä, ovat täynnä sampleja ja digitoituja kuvia, ja joista ei peliä löydä itkemälläkään. Amigisteilla on jälleen onni ja autuus syöttää koneeseensa uusi Star Trek -peli, joka ei paitsi maksa mitään myös kuuluu Trek-pelien parhaimmistoon.
Ideana pelissä on lentää Enterprisellä (Enterprise-luokan NCC-1701-A) systeemistä toiseen lastia poimien ja jättäen. Lentoa värittävät romulaanien ja klingoneiden hyökkäykset sekä asteroidiparvet. Kun tähtialus on sitten saatu hinattua vakiokiertoradalle kohdeplaneetan ympärille, voi lastia siirtää joko transportereilla tahi hätätapauksessa sukkulalla. Vakavasti vaurioituneen aluksen saa lentokuntoon lähimmässä Starbasessa.
Graafisesti peli on aivan kaupallista tasoa. Ilmeisesti digitoidut ja manuaalisesti parannetut ruudut hakevat vertaistaan, eivätkä ääniefektitkään ole hassumpia. Esimerkiksi tähtikartassa on kaikki Federaation järjestelmät oikeilla paikoillaan. Toiminta esitetään spritejen ja vektorigrafiikan risteytyksenä ihan toimivasti.
Pahin vika on edelleen varsinaisen pelin puuttuminen. Taisteluosuudet, vaikka Firebirdin vastaavat päihittävätkin, eivät ole tarpeeksi mielenkiintoisia kannattaakseen peliä, kuten eivät myöskään kiertoradalle pujottautuminen tahi sukkulalla lentely. Myös ergonomia kömmähtelee siellä sun täällä. Kaiken kaikkiaan pelistä jää turhan pinnallinen maku, ja saksalainen käsitys englanninkielestä pistää hymyilyttämään.
Puutteineenkin Star Trek - The Shareware on vähintäänkin hintansa väärtti, ja Tobiakselle kannattaa rahaa lähettää, mieluimmin kritiikin kera, jotta hän innostuisi pelin kehittelystä.
1990 KevätThere seem to be a bunch of Star Trek games for the Amiga on PD disks. I've seen a couple of Yankee contraptions that use several disks, are full of samples and digitised pictures, and in which you won't find a game for love nor money. Amiga owners once again have the good fortune and bliss of feeding their machines a new Star Trek game which not only costs nothing but also ranks among the very best of the Trek games.
The idea of the game is to fly the Enterprise (the Enterprise-class NCC-1701-A) from one system to another, picking up and dropping off cargo. The flights are livened up by Romulan and Klingon attacks and asteroid swarms. Once the starship has been hauled into standard orbit around the destination planet, you can transfer the cargo either by transporter or, in an emergency, by shuttle. A badly damaged ship can be made spaceworthy again at the nearest Starbase.
Graphically the game is fully up to commercial standard. The screens, apparently digitised and touched up by hand, are second to none, and the sound effects aren't half bad either. The star map, for example, has all the Federation's systems in their proper places. The action is presented, quite workably, as a cross between sprites and vector graphics.
The worst flaw is still the lack of an actual game. The combat sections, although they beat Firebird's equivalents, aren't interesting enough to carry the game, and neither is threading your way into orbit or pottering about in the shuttle. The ergonomics bungle about here and there too. All in all the game leaves an unduly shallow taste, and the German idea of the English language raises a smile.
Even with its shortcomings, Star Trek - The Shareware is at the very least worth its price, and it's worth sending Tobias some money, preferably with some criticism attached, to fire up enthusiasm for developing the game further.
