Skyfox II

Joskus 1985 ilmestyi Skyfox, jonka erinomainen grafiikka peitti yksinkertaisen pelin.

Grafiikka on osittain hyvin onnistunutta.

1988Space, the last of the untrodden wildernesses. This is the game of the space fighter Skyfox, its mission of varying length: to blast the xenomorphs from one end of the galaxy to the other, and to be a sequel like no sequel has ever been before.

Back around 1985 came Skyfox, whose excellent graphics covered up a simple game. And unfortunately Skyfox II can't manage much better.

The Skyfox is equipped with all the basic kit, such as shields, a neutron disruptor, photon bombs, antimatter mines and radar. Less commonly seen novelties are the autopilot and a cloaking device that hides the fighter from the xenomorphs' radar.

Oddly, space contains only bases, asteroid fields and 'wormholes', which make faster-than-light travel possible. Such trifles as suns and planets have been forgotten.

As a game, Skyfox II resembles its predecessor far too much. Although there are ten different missions, in the end they all follow the same formula: flying about, dodging asteroids and destroying xenomorph ships (of which there is, once again, only one model) and bases.

The graphics are in part very well done. The asteroid fields feel and look very natural, but the sprite enemies and bases won't startle anyone with their realism. The sound is pretty feeble too.

Skyfox II is too simple to be a simulator, but too slow-paced to be a satisfying shoot-'em-up. Electronic Arts should have gone to a lot more trouble and made a game with more than an inch of depth.
