Rimrunner
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Ideana Rimrunnerissa on puolustaa Insektoideja Arachnoideja vastaan. Liskolla ratsastavan Rimrunnerin täytyy huoltaa puolustussatelliitteja, jotka estävät invaasion ja samalla tiputella lentäviä vihollisia rakkaalla haulikollaan.
Rimrunner on todella ammattitaitoista työtä. Hiscore-taulukko on todella erinomainen.
1988Palace is a company that releases few games, but good ones. When the firm's best forces are behind a game, there's reason to expect something extra.
The idea in Rimrunner is to defend the Insectoids against the Arachnoids. Rimrunner, riding a lizard, has to maintain the defence satellites that keep the invasion at bay, and at the same time pick flying enemies out of the sky with their beloved shotgun.
Rimrunner is truly professional work. The insectoid rider and their lizard steed are animated first-class, the backgrounds are splendid and the sound effects have been made with care. The hiscore table is truly excellent.
Which makes it all the more a pity that the game itself doesn't excite. In typical English fashion the screen has been crammed full of flying sprites, and because of the limited field of fire the insectoid is hardly a match for them. Sometimes it feels as though the English idea of a shoot-'em-up rests on the rule "The more and the faster the sprites, the better the game." Rimrunner hasn't got even a token amount of depth, so it soon starts repeating itself, and it doesn't convince even on a purely spinal-cord level. Satisfying violence is missing.
So much for the something extra. For the first time, Palace's axe strikes stone. Let's hope future games sharpen the blunted blade.
