Psycho Soldier
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1988Athena, tuttu pelistä Athena, on palannut! (vaimeita aplodeja). Jumalten oikut ovat heittäneet sankarittaremme vaihtoehto-Maahan, jossa ihmiskunta on vain saalista ahnaille demoneille. Sankaritar kun on, Athena päättää auttaa ihmispoloja ja aloittaa verivanan viitoittaman taivalluksensa kohti maailman pimeää sydäntä, jossa päädemoni odottaa.
Tässä Taiton arcadepeliin pohjautuvassa käännöksessä ilmenee eräs hauska etninen seikka: kannessa on murrosikäisen unelmaa muistuttava valkyria, mutta pelissä seikkailee noin kuusivuotiaan näköinen söpö lettipää. Tämä johtuu siitä, että Japanissa pitää pelissä olla nimenomaan söpö sankari(tar), kun taas Englannissa moisen lyöminen kanteen ei lisää myyntiä, päinvastoin.
Kansi onkin mielenkiintoisinta mitä pelistä löytää. Athena juoksee pitkin tasoja, ampuu kaikkea mikä liikkuu ja löytää toisinaan hyödyllisiä (tai vahingollisia) esineitä. Eli siis täsmälleen samaa mitä on nähty kvantiljoona kertaa aikaisemmin. Grafiikka ei häikäise, pelattavuuskaan ei ole kummoinen ja koko pelityyppi sinänsä ei innosta pätkääkään. Ihmetyttää miksi koko peli yleensä on julkaistu, sillä käsittääkseni Psycho Soldier (miten huonosti peliä kuvaava nimi!) ei arcadepelinäkään mikään hitti ole ollut. Ehkä Imaginen lisenssisopimus Taiton kanssa sitä vaati, tai sitten muut Taiton pelit on jo käännetty. Who knows, who cares...
1988Athena, familiar from the game Athena, is back! (muted applause). The whims of the gods have hurled our heroine onto an alternative Earth, where mankind is nothing but prey for greedy demons. Being a heroine and all, Athena decides to help the poor humans and sets off on a trek, signposted by a trail of blood, towards the dark heart of the world where the head demon awaits.
This conversion of a Taito arcade game reveals an amusing ethnic quirk: the cover features a Valkyrie straight out of an adolescent's dreams, but the one adventuring in the game is a cute pigtailed kid who looks about six years old. This is because in Japan a game has to have a specifically cute hero(ine), whereas in England slapping one of those on the cover doesn't boost sales, quite the opposite.
The cover is in fact the most interesting thing to be found in the game. Athena runs along platforms, shoots everything that moves and now and then finds useful (or harmful) items. In other words, exactly the same thing that's been seen a zillion times before. The graphics don't dazzle, the playability is nothing much either, and the whole game genre as such doesn't excite one bit. It's a wonder why the game was released at all, since as far as I know Psycho Soldier (what a poor description of the game that name is!) wasn't any kind of hit even as an arcade game. Maybe Imagine's licensing deal with Taito demanded it, or else all the other Taito games have already been converted. Who knows, who cares...
