Power at Sea

1988Aika: 1944. Paikka: Leyten lahti, Filippiinit, jossa sijaitsee Japanin viimeinen puolustuslinja. Tehtävä: puhdistaa Leyte laivaston ja merijalkaväen avustuksella.

Laivat taitavat olla jenkeissä in, koska Electronic Arts julkaisee rinnakkain kaksi laivastoaiheista peliä. Accoladen tekemä Power at Sea on näistä pelimäisempi.

Sukellusveneet on unohdettu jonnekin.

1988Time: 1944. Place: Leyte Gulf, the Philippines, site of Japan's last line of defence. Mission: clear Leyte with the help of the navy and the marines.

Ships must be the in thing over in Yankeeland, since Electronic Arts is releasing two naval games side by side. Of the two, Accolade's Power at Sea is the more game-like.

Power... is a mixture of strategy game and arcade romp. It bears an astonishing resemblance to Epyx's Destroyer. In just the same way you can bombard Japanese gun emplacements, clash with ships and try to bring down kamikaze fighters. The main difference is that Power has only one target and a fair bit more strategy. The implementation also leans less on the simulation side and more on shooting. Not that Destroyer was any kind of simulator either.

The idea is to attack the Japanese bases, soften them up with the guns and send in the marines to finish the job. Now and then Japanese ships come at you, now and then aircraft turn up to buzz around. The submarines have been forgotten somewhere.

Somehow, ever since Accolade moved over to Electronic Arts, the quality of its games has dropped. Power, too, is partly let down by rather simple and bare graphics and rather wretched sound, and the game isn't all that terribly original either. Quite soon the game starts repeating itself.

Sure, you'll still play Power for a while, but I'd have liked to see Accolade put more effort into a careful implementation and into fine-tuning the playability. Oh well, there's always room in the world for wishes.
