Battle of Midway

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Battle of Midway

1987Vaihteeksi yritys tuoda meritaistelun maailma strategiapelaajan näyttöruudulle. Pelin malliksi on valittu kuuluisa Midwayn taistelu Toisesta maailmansodasta. Japanin voittamattomalta tuntunut laivasto sai ensi kertaa maistaa tappion kalkin. Toisaalta mikäli USA olisi hävinnyt, koko Yhdysvaltain länsirannikko olisi ollut alttiina hyökkäykselle.

Yksittäisen meritaistelun puitteissa on kuitenkin vaikeaa antaa pelaajalle mahdollisuutta toteuttaa itseään huonosti ymmärrettynä amiraalina.

Kaiken kaikkiaan varsin kehno esitys.

1987Here, for a change, is an attempt to bring the world of naval warfare to the strategy gamer's screen. The model chosen for the game is the famous Battle of Midway from the Second World War. This battle, as we know, was the turning point in the war between the United States and Japan. Japan's seemingly invincible navy got its first taste of the bitter cup of defeat. On the other hand, had the USA lost, the entire west coast of the United States would have been open to attack.

Within the confines of a single naval battle, however, it is hard to give the player a chance to fulfil themselves as a misunderstood admiral. Only a game covering the entire Pacific War might pull that off. As it is, the game consists mainly of steering reconnaissance planes around in search of enemy ships. When the enemy is finally spotted, guiding the bombers to their targets is utterly routine.

As is PSS's habit, a little mini-game has been crammed in, which in principle is supposed to make the player feel part of the battle. The player controls a single anti-aircraft gun (a Japanese one as well), which is then used to blast away a bit here, there and everywhere. The feeling never arrives, though, since the game is, to put it mildly, on the dull side, and after the first couple of tries you get totally fed up with it.

The graphics, or the lack of them, also soon start getting on your nerves while playing. The figures, done in character graphics, hop about here and there, and there is no way whatsoever to tell the air squadrons apart.

All in all, a pretty feeble performance. SSI has also made a strategy game based on the Pacific battles, though it hasn't been seen in Finland. Hopefully it hasn't fallen into the same mistakes as this sorry effort.
