Powerdrome

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Powerdrome

Virittämismaastoa tarjoavat polttoainesekoitus, siivekekoko, jarrut, ohjausherkkyys ja pisteenä i:n päälle fitterivalinta.

Powerdrome on rallipelien eliittiä.

1989 KevätJust when it was starting to look as if everything had already been squeezed out of racing games, Electronic Arts takes the wheels off the racing cars and moves the tracks to other planets. This is a small change in the game format, but a big step for racing games.

In rough outline Powerdrome is like any racing game. The player can practise on the tracks alone, has to drive through a qualifying lap, and then the race begins. There are six possible tracks and four other competitors. Changing weather conditions cause difficulties your average Keke has never even heard of, such as ammonia storms and other phenomena inseparable from the Finnish summer.

Then the brainwork begins. You can tune your machine pretty much without restraint. Tuning terrain is provided by the fuel mix, wing size, brakes, steering sensitivity and, to dot the i, the choice of filter. The wrong filter in the wrong type of atmosphere can cause anything from reduced power all the way to the whole engine going kaput. During the race you can patch up damage in the pits, complete with fine graphical effects.

And now that we've got to the graphics, there's nothing to do but praise. The three-dimensional track updates oh so beautifully and quickly that you can only admire it. Of the Amiga there was only a preview copy to test, which mainly revealed just the usual speed difference in the ST's favour. Presumably the Amiga will nonetheless have a beefier audio side, which is in fact the only minus in the ST version. Admirers of static graphics will probably find satisfaction in the superb pit-stop graphics.

Powerdrome is no grab-the-stick-and-drive kind of game, but then the satisfaction is on another level entirely once you rise above mobile-roadblock level and start holding your own against your rivals. Powerdrome is the elite of racing games.
