Pirates!
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1988Nyt kannattaa katsella Flynn Error -elokuvia, sillä mahtava Microprose on ottanut asiakseen siirtää pääkallolipun alla purjehtivat laivat seilaamaan kuusnelosen muistiavaruutta. Pirates! sijoittuu keskimäärin 1600-luvulle, jolloin meriä hallitsivat silloiset suurvallat Espanja, Englanti, Ranska ja Hollanti. Eri aikakausia on viisi.
Pirates! on kokonaan joystick-ohjattu, joten verenvuodatus käy mukavasti löhöillen. Päällisin puolin peli muistuttaa paljon Electronic Artsin Seven Cities of Goldia, eli laivaa ohjaillaan scrollaavalla kartalla.
Harmi! Muutenkin Pirates! on sellainen enempi herrasmiesrosvo-tyyppinen peli. Rommilta haisevat tappajapsykopaatit on unohdettu täysin.
1988Now is the time to watch some Flynn Error films, because the mighty Microprose has taken it upon itself to set ships flying the skull and crossbones sailing across the memory space of the Commodore 64. Pirates! is set, on average, in the 17th century, when the seas were ruled by the great powers of the day: Spain, England, France and Holland. There are five different eras.
Pretty much every activity that goes with the trade is included. You can capture, plunder and sink ships, attack port towns either by land or by sea, and smuggling and software copying are also one way of raising capital. A successful buccaneer collects gold, glory and status. When the career is nearing its end, the terror of the seas can retire to rest on the laurels. The career is then scored and assessed, and you are told what profession the ex-pirate ends up in.
Pirates! is entirely joystick-controlled, so the bloodshed can be done lounging about comfortably. On the surface the game closely resembles Electronic Arts' Seven Cities of Gold, i.e. you steer your ship around a scrolling map. Sea battles are fought between two little ships, and you also get to cross swords with the enemy captain. The governors' daughters (some of whom are beautiful and others ugly and devout) can be wooed. On top of that there is a bunch of mini-adventures, like treasure hunting and whatnot.
Pirates! is an interesting and playable game, which may nevertheless grow monotonous over time. But then, so do almost all games.
The only real flaw is that in Pirates it is impossible to die. At worst you get taken hostage or shipwrecked on some little island. And before you know it, the dread of the seas is back in business once again. Somehow a sentence of hanging would have been more realistic, since without the fear of death there is no taste of challenge. Oh, and you can't make anyone walk the plank either. Pity! Generally Pirates! is more of a gentleman-thief sort of game. The rum-reeking psychopathic killers have been forgotten entirely.
In Microprose style, Pirates! once again comes with a thick and excellent manual, without which the game can't really be played. Now that'll annoy the pirates. The program sucks in 340 kilobytes of data and the disk is constantly spinning, so the tape version is best approached with suspicion.
Summa summarum: Pirates! is not the best game in the world, but it is at least worth the price. And these days even that is an achievement. So go on, line up your doubloons for the games dealer to plunder.
