Morpheus
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Mahdollisuus parantaa alusta kuitenkin lisää huomattavan annoksen kiinnostavuutta peliin.
1988Morpheus is a game by the legendary Andrew Braybrook, and it's coming out somewhat late, thanks to Rainbird and Hewson's battle for Andrew's soul.
Morpheus is no Uridium-type shoot'em-up; instead its ambitious game idea is rather complex. So complex, in fact, that it would take a couple of pages to explain in detail. In brief: the player has to destroy the Centre, which is done by collapsing its Orbiters. On top of that, various Morphs are bobbing around in space, and as the game goes on they evolve and develop a resistance to the player's weapons. That's why the player has to keep fitting new weapons and other systems to the ship. More can - and must - be read in the 50-page tome that comes with the game.
It's remarkable what you can squeeze out of the Commodore 64 when you know how. The graphics and the rest of the execution are, you see, incredible. The sprites could for the most part have come almost straight from the Amiga (which is where they were in fact developed). Nor is Morpheus half bad as a game, either. Once it starts to dawn on you what you're supposed to do, you begin to get a taste for it. The shoot'em-up part doesn't quite hit the target, as the ship is sooo big and the screen sooo small that claustrophobia creeps up on you. The chance to upgrade the ship does, however, add a considerable dose of interest to the game. Still, it feels as though Morheus's idea would work better as an Elite-type vector game.
In any case, Morpheus is another feather in Braybrook's cap. Still, it's worth making sure your English is up to scratch, because without understanding the manual the game may remain murky, to put it mildly. And anyway the game certainly won't please everybody, but it sure pleased me.
