M.A.C.H.
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1988"Olen ikävystynyt", totesi liipasinsormeni kyllästyneenä kädelle, "keksi minulle jotain tekemistä!" "Ok, saamasi pitää", vastasi käsi ja syötti levariin tanskalaisen softafirman Starvisionin ensimmäisen toimintapelin M.A.C.H.:in.
Kahden pelaajan tiimityöskentelystä tulee puolestaan mieleen Gauntlet. Taustagrafiikka on suhteellisen selkeää, eikä sisällä mitään erityisjippoja.
Mutta sellaisiahan nämä pelit ovat - shoot'em-ups are shoot'em-ups even if you shoot'em up.
1988"I'm bored," my trigger finger said wearily to the hand, "find me something to do!" "OK, you asked for it," replied the hand, and fed the drive M.A.C.H., the first action game from the Danish software house Starvision. The drive blinked its red light and chewed on the disk for a moment, and the trigger finger waited impatiently while the ears and eyes took in the title screen and title music. "Doesn't exactly make you jump," remarked the eyes. "Nice tunes," replied the ears. The disk drive toiled on for a while longer, and then the screen woke the trigger finger up: "Okay, let's get going. Kill them all, and if you can't cope on your own, bring a mate along to help!"
M.A.C.H. is a shoot'em-up and it has to be judged as one - there's no getting over it or round it, only through it with lasers. As the first action game from a fledgling company, it's no mean achievement.
In the game you are a space-suited lawman of the future who has to defeat the rebel robot Nektron and its robot army. The job is done once you've scrolled your way through three planets' worth of screens and destroyed all the vacilators, gyphons and motherships. To help you out there are lasers, bombs and power-up icons in the style of Delta and Nemesis. The two-player teamwork, for its part, brings Gauntlet to mind. The background graphics are relatively clear and don't contain any special tricks. The sprites could have been polished up a bit and the animation slowed down a touch, and the overall impression would have been more pleasing. The audio side is in good shape, with the speaker letting rip with typical SID sounds and tunes.
There's nothing actually wrong with M.A.C.H. as such, but it doesn't have that certain something that would turn it into a chart hit either. The two-player option is a nice feature, but it also comes with a two-player boredom option. The only way to get anywhere in the game is by shooting ever more blobs to bits, which for some reason just doesn't manage to get you fired up. The aftertaste it leaves is the sourness of a middling product. But then that's what these games are like - shoot'em-ups are shoot'em-ups even if you shoot'em up.
