Mag Max

Pum pum, bang, Game Over.

Mag Max on täydellisen keskinkertainen peli. Sitä on yhtä vaikea haukkua kuin kehua. Kun maailma on täynnä mielenkiintoisia kolikkopelejä, miksi Imagine itsepintaisesti tekee pelejä, joita maailma on jo täynnä?

1987Mankind was in a pickle. Mechanical nasties are destroying everything in their path. But luckily there is Mag Max, the invincible, brave and last battle robot, mankind's ray of hope, phrase phrase, cliché!

But before Mag Max can save humanity and the values we believe in and which form the foundation of our culture, he has to pull himself together. And we don't mean the "where-am-I-who-am-I process" familiar from certain mornings, but pulling himself together quite literally. For Mag Moritz's parts have been left lying on the surface and in caves, and that's where they have to be fetched from. Every part found improves Max's attack and defence capabilities. And those will certainly be needed against the dragon lurking at the end of every enemy wave. So there you have it.

Usually you shouldn't judge a book by its backstory. This time it tells the truth: Mag Max is a run-of-the-mill left-to-right scrolling shoot-'em-up, with enemy craft and assorted ground targets to face. Bang bang, boom, Game Over. Sure, you can happily play that sort of thing too, if the graphics and sound create the right atmosphere. This time they've ended up a bit mediocre.

The sprites are reasonably good, but the backgrounds are simple and bear little resemblance to the arcade game's, and on the sound side, too, the effort has hardly been maxed out. On this showing nobody is going to be converted to the Maxist world view.

Mag Max is a perfectly mediocre game. It's as hard to slate as it is to praise. When the world is full of interesting arcade games, why does Imagine stubbornly insist on making games the world is already full of?
