Hysteria

Musiikkikin on kohtalaista, muttei mitenkään hyvää.

En todellakaan ymmärrä Hysterian ulkomailla saamia hyviä arvosteluja. Uskomatonta, kuinka tällainen roska uppoaa ihmisiin. Pysy kaukana!

1988Software Projects has made a brisk arcade game with plenty of action, brilliant graphics, good music and absence of sense.

Credit to the company: there has been no attempt to dream up any kind of backstory for this game, about what has happened and how vital it is to survive. No, all that's included, coolly, are the playing instructions briefly explained, and a smidgen of other information.

And here are those playing instructions: you have to bounce around the playing area (preferably running constantly to the right), shooting the oncoming skeletons, nags, centaurs and whatever-they-are. Every so often you spot a blob sitting on top of a pillar or on a roof, which has to be shot down. If the blob leaves an object behind, you have to take it. This way you can get new weapons, defensive devices or a flying gizmo. Unfortunately a new device may eliminate the previous one.

Once you've brought down all the little blobs, the Big Blob itself turns up, and it too wants a taste of your weapon's firepower. Unfortunately the Big Blob takes many, many hits, and it's easy to give up the ghost yourself. If you manage to put the Big Blob six feet under, you get a well-earned break, everyone breathes a sigh of relief, everyone is happy and the world is a good place to live again. Until the next level starts...

The graphics are really good, and they are indeed the best thing about the game. The screen scrolling is also smooth and fast. But that's where Hysteria's merits end. A game-thingy that wallows in its graphics, nothing more. Even the music is only middling, not good by any means.

I really don't understand the good reviews Hysteria has got abroad. Incredible how people lap up rubbish like this. Stay away!
