Grid Start
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1988Punainen vaihtuu vihreäksi ja salamannopea formulani syöksyy vauhtiin. Kärkyn aivan kärkijoukon tuntumassa. Kiihtyvyys tuntuu rajulta ja ensimmäinen kaarre herättää minut tosi toimiin. Kevyt jarrutus ja uusi kiihdytys. Suora aukenee ja piiskaan autostani viimeisetkin tehot irti 'boost'-toiminnolla kuten Ritari Ässä konsanaan...
Ancon Grid Start saa taas vauhtiveijarien suonissa olevan bensan vauhtiin.
1988The red turns to green and my lightning-fast formula car hurtles away. I'm lurking right on the heels of the leading pack. The acceleration feels brutal and the first bend jolts me into action for real. A light touch on the brakes and accelerate again. The straight opens up and I whip the very last ounce of power out of my car with the 'boost' function, just like Knight Rider himself...
Anco's Grid Start gets the petrol in speed freaks' veins racing again. A game offering wild speed and nice graphics has pretty much always been near the top of the sales charts.
As an implementation, Grid Start is not the best of its breed. Overtaking calls for nerve-racking aiming, since even the slightest bump into the car you're passing or into the hay bales along the edges is fatal. It doesn't feel all that realistic for a car to explode into tiny fragments in the blink of an eye when it hits a hay bale.
The scenery and the cars are fairly pretty, although the cars move too jerkily. The Amiga's mighty musical resources don't get to come into their own in Grid Start, since there's music only on the title screen, and even there just a short digitised snippet. The sound effects are passable, but imagine how it would feel to drive with digitised sound effects roaring out of the speakers.
Grid Start is no masterpiece, but it's not from the very bottom of the barrel either. A good alternative to the glut of shoot-'em-ups, since those are already bursting out of every corner.
