Fire And Forget

1988Ensin oli kolikkopeli nimeltä Outrun. U.S. Gold osti siihen oikeudet ja alkoi kiireellä tehdä kotikonekäännöstä. Titus ehti kuitenkin ensin Crazy Carsillaan.

Äänipuoli on aika mitäänsanomaton, Amigalle tyypilliseen tapaan suurimman osan äänistä muodostaa jostakin nimeämättömästä lähteestä napattu sample. Hienosäätö on jonkin verran mennyt pieleen, koska F&F on väännetty hieman liian vaikeaksi. Luulisin, että ainoa ihminen joka tätä peliä jaksaa pelata kovin kauaa, on joku sellainen joka on maksanut viimeiset pennosensa ja hänen on pakko pelata, vaikka hampaat irvessä. F&F on vaikeudestaan huolimatta kelvollinen Roadblasters-klooni, jota pelaa jonkin aikaa odotellessaan virallista käännöstä.

1988First there was a coin-op called Outrun. U.S. Gold bought the rights to it and started hurriedly making a home computer conversion. Titus, however, got there first with its Crazy Cars. Then along comes a game in the arcade world called Roadblasters, which was practically Outrun with a bit of shooting stirred in. U.S. Gold bought the rights to that one too and started hurriedly making a home computer conversion. And once again Titus got there first with its Fire & Forget.

To keep at least some shred of restraint, the plot has not been copied outright. In Fire & Forget the player's task is to tear around in a four-wheel-drive, triple-engined combat car and destroy enemy tanks, helicopters and buildings. To help out, the driver of the car can call up the Thunder Cloud, a magnetic levitation unit. (That's what it says on the box, honestly!)

At first glance you can see that a large amount of code has been taken straight from Crazy Cars into Fire & Forget. The next thing to catch the eye is the commendable graphics. The sound side is fairly nondescript; as is typical for the Amiga, most of the sound is made up of a sample nabbed from some unnamed source. The fine-tuning has gone somewhat wrong, because F&F has been made a bit too difficult. I'd guess that the only person who will bother to play this game for very long is someone who has paid out their last pennies for it and has to play it, through gritted teeth. Despite its difficulty, F&F is a passable Roadblasters clone to play for a while as you wait for the official conversion.
