Dungeonmaster
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Taikajärjestelmä on uskottavan tuntuinen.
Dungeonmaster on klassikko jo syntyessään.
1988"This is one small step for mankind, but a giant leap for computerised role-playing games." Now there's a suitably solemn opening for this masterpiece that opens up a whole new world.
As for Dungeonmaster's plot, suffice it to say that the aim is to save the universe by guiding four heroes through the depths of a dungeon and finding the legendary Firestaff.
The game tries to put the player in the middle of an underground network of tunnels and to create as realistic an environment as possible. And it succeeds well. With Dungeonmaster, even my own flat seemed to turn into a gloomy dungeon (not much of a change, actually). The greatest credit goes to the graphics. With their all-round attention to detail they create a truly convincing sense of 'being somewhere else'. For example, as a torch burns low, the dungeon and its inhabitants are gradually wrapped in the embrace of the shadows. There are puddles on the floor, and moss, hooks and other decorations on the walls. The realistic sound effects only make the tight atmosphere even tighter. The game is played in real time, which adds even further to its incredible atmosphere.
All the monsters are big and impressive. They by no means just pop up out of nowhere in front of the party; they behave like rational beings. The player can be sure that if a mummy flits past in the torchlight, it doesn't vanish into thin air but lurks somewhere with evil on its mind and the good guys as its prey.
The versatile game system is entirely mouse-driven and remarkably pleasant to use. The magic system feels believable. Spells are assembled from different components, and wizards gain the experience for stronger magic by casting spells, not by fighting. The manual gives some hints about spells, and there are scrolls in the dungeon that tell you more.
Dungeonmaster was two years in development, and it shows. Another pleasing thing is that the game fits on a single disk. Its depth is guaranteed by the fact that the disk holds over 800 kilobytes of game data. Dungeonmaster is a classic from the moment it was born. You won't play it through in a flash, and the pull lasts right to the end. And FTL has promised to make more, different dungeon disks in the future, so the struggle continues.
