Deflektor
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1988Oletko koskaan haaveillut olevasi operaattori, joka sinnikkäästi ohjailee peileillä vikkelää (300.000 km/s on aika vikkelää) lasersädettä? Nyt voit vihdoinkin toteuttaa tämän unelman, joka on kiehtonut ihmiskuntaa aina ensimmäisestä Australopithecuksesta lähtien.
Deflektorin idea on varsin omaperäinen. Pelaajan pitää ohjailla aina päällä olevaa lasersädettä tuhoamaan kentällä olevat 'solut'. Pelaaja ei ohjaile sädettä, vaan lähinnä kentällä olevia peilejä. Ohjaus tapahtuu joystickillä ja kursorilla. Muut kentällä olevat esineet joko heijastavat, imevät tai jopa siirtävät säteen. Kun kaikki solut on tuhottu täytyy säde johtaa vastaanottimeen, jolloin siirrytään toiseen kenttään. Kaikesta täytyy suoriutua ennenkuin energia loppuu. Ongelmia aiheuttaa pöpö nimeltä Gremlin, josta on hauska väännellä peilejä sinne sun tänne.
Varsinainen vaara on ylikuormitus.
Pelinä Deflektor on älsän vänkä. Siinä edistyy aina tarpeeksi, jotta joystickistä on vaikea luopua.
1988Have you ever dreamed of being an operator who doggedly steers a nippy (300,000 km/s is pretty nippy) laser beam with mirrors? Now you can finally make this dream come true, a dream that has fascinated mankind ever since the very first Australopithecus.
Deflektor's idea is quite original. The player has to steer a laser beam that is always on so that it destroys the 'cells' on the level. The player doesn't steer the beam as such, but rather the mirrors on the level. Control is with the joystick and a cursor. The other objects on the level either reflect, absorb or even shift the beam somewhere else. When all the cells have been destroyed, the beam has to be led into the receiver, whereupon you move on to another level. All of this has to be done before the energy runs out. Trouble is caused by a little bug called Gremlin, who thinks it's fun to twist the mirrors every which way.
The real danger is overload. If the beam reflects back towards the laser, is too long or points at the mines on the level, the overload meter starts to rise. And if the bar goes all the way up, it's 'Boom Boom Boom', as the game puts it.
As a game, Deflektor is totally ace. You always make just enough progress that it's hard to let go of the joystick. Overloading may be harmful to laser equipment, but for the little grey cells it does nothing but good. The graphics and the game system work, and even though Deflektor doesn't give rise to any manic craving, you do end up playing it every so often. Not a must-buy, but it has my sincere blessing.
