Cyborg

Pelattavuutta lukuunottamatta Cyborg on teknisesti tasokas.

1987Planet Earth is doomed for the millionth time. A gigantic asteroid is on a collision course, and the scientists who set off to investigate have gone missing. A cyborg is needed to help: half man, half machine (in other words, just like anyone who plays with home computers too much). But what do you know, the asteroid isn't an asteroid after all but an alien spaceship. The rest is probably obvious to everyone.

The setting is a grand one. Cyborg can explore the insides of the asteroid and hook itself up to computers, and at the wrist there's muscle, a handgun and a little computer. There's plenty of scope, and you can even save the game. (Though it didn't work on my disk version...) A sure-fire hit, then?

Speaking purely subjectively, the game's programmers ought to be stood up against a wall and shot as a warning to the rest. It's truly magnificent how, if you really want to, you can completely water down even the best of ideas. At the start the game is so hard that your interest drops off fast. The one and only time I did get something done, Cyborg then refused to come back out of the computer link. Needless to say, the instructions aren't exactly a help.

The precision needed to examine objects is down to the pixel, the enemies are about as believable as in Cobra, and the Veil of Mediocrity hangs over the whole game. This is a real pity, because Cyborg would have all the ingredients a classic needs, but what you're left holding is a mediocre action adventure.

Playability aside, Cyborg is technically of a high standard. The graphics are good and the sound is passable. It may be that there's even a good game lurking beneath Cyborg's surface. Maybe by playing and playing and playing the truth would come out. But the world is full of games, so why waste time on a dud?
