Carrier Force

1987Carries Force on sotastrategiapeli. Ajassa siirrytään yli 40 vuotta taaksepäin toisen maailmansodan tärkeimpiin hetkiin. Tapahtumapaikkana on Tyynimeri. Vaikeustasoja on monia.

Ilmavoimia on muistettava käyttää paljon hyväkseen. Kannattaa aina pitää ainakin yksi lentue ilmassa koko ajan, jotta se pystyisi estämään vihollisen pommittajien hyökkäykset. Japanilaisella pelaajalla on yleensä enemmän laivoja, mutta niitä tasapainottamassa on yleensä yhdysvaltalaisten suurempi voima.

Peli tarjoaa mahdollisuuden katsoa karttaa. Tämä tapahtuu muiden strategiapelien tapaan kuvaruudun kokoisesta ikkunasta, josta näkee osan koko alueesta. Tätä karttaa pitääkin käyttää hyväkseen ilmahyökkäyksiä tehdessä, sillä sen avulla ohjataan ilmalaivueita. Laivasto-osastot liikkuvat omaa annettua kurssiaan. Kurssin vaihdoksissa ei tarvita tietokoneen karttaa.

Siirtojen syöttö on normaaleista peleistä poikkeava.

Kuitenkin pelin tekijöiltä on eräs tärkeä asia unohtunut. Karttojen mukana ei tule pelinappuloita, joiden avulla pystyisi helposti toteamaan pelin tilanteen. Itse korjasin sen minitarranpaloilla, joiden päälle asetin pienen paperinpalasen. Paperilla luki kyseisen yksikön järjestysnumero. Tällä tavoin saakin selvän kartan.

Carrier Force on peli ajattelijoille.

Itse ohjelmassa on muutamia harmittavia piirteitä. Koko peli rakentuu Basicin ympärille. Se taas hidastaa pelin toimintaa, koska tietokone laskee vastasiirtonsa huolella. Tosin suurin osa strategiapeleistä on Basicia tai käännettyä Pascalia, jotta riittävän pieneen tilaan mahtuisi riittävästi ohjelmakoodia.

Pelin idea on hyvä. Puutteena on hitaus ja pelinappuloiden puute. Kokonaisuutena peli on kuitenkin erikoinen.

1987Carries Force is a war strategy game. It takes you more than 40 years back in time, to the most important moments of the Second World War. The setting is the Pacific. The player gets the chance to refight the famous naval battles of Santa Cruz, Midway, the Solomons and the Coral Sea. The game can be played with historical or randomly chosen starting positions. There are many difficulty levels.

In this game the player knows nothing of the opponent's moves. The radars are too weak to see a distant enemy, which has to be found with the help of search planes.

This game calls for a lot of strategic thinking. The player may accidentally send the wrong ships against the enemy. They can then easily be destroyed. You must remember to make plenty of use of your air power. It always pays to keep at least one squadron in the air at all times, so that it can fend off attacks by the enemy's bombers. The Japanese player usually has more ships, but these are usually balanced out by the greater strength of the Americans.

The game gives you the option of looking at a map. As in other strategy games, this is done through a screen-sized window that shows part of the whole area. You really do have to make use of this map when launching air strikes, since it is used to direct the air squadrons. The naval task forces keep to their own assigned courses. Changing course does not require the computer map.

Entering moves is different from normal games. Instead of single-key commands and a map that is on view all the time, the screen is normally in text mode the whole time. As such this dampens the atmosphere a little, but with the maps that come with the game you can picture the situation.

The maps give you a clear picture of the battle area. The game's makers have, however, forgotten one important thing. The maps don't come with any counters that would let you easily keep track of the state of the game. I fixed this myself with little bits of sticker, on top of which I placed a small scrap of paper. The paper had the number of the unit in question written on it. This way you do end up with a clear map.

Carrier Force is a game for thinkers. It feels tedious, especially when you don't know where the enemy is. Searching for enemy units is in fact the most frustrating pastime this game has to offer. At the same time, though, it can also set your nerves tingling, since you can sometimes find the enemy in quite surprising places.

The program itself has a few annoying features. The whole game is built around Basic. That in turn slows the game down, as the computer works out its replies carefully. Then again, most strategy games are in Basic or compiled Pascal, so that enough program code will fit into a small enough space.

The idea of the game is good. Its shortcomings are the slowness and the lack of counters. As a whole, though, the game is something out of the ordinary.
