Bubble Bobble
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1988Bubble Bobble on jälleen yksi kolikkopelikäännös. Taiton alkuperäisestä arcade-pelistä on Firebird kääntänyt oikein mukiinmenevän pomppimispelin.
Pisteistä nahinoiminen on kahden pelaajan versiossa hauskinta!
Ohjelman tekninen toteutus on huippuluokkaa. Bubble Bobblen pelattavuus on huippuluokkaa.
1988Bubble Bobble is yet another coin-op conversion. Out of Taito's original arcade game Firebird has made a thoroughly decent jumping game.
The leading roles are played by two cheeky little baby dragons, Bub and Bob. As in Mario Bros, two players can play at the same time, which brings double the fun. The idea is to hop about using platforms floating in mid-air and eliminate bugs that could easily be mistaken for something out of Dig Dug.
The dragons can blow bubbles. When a moving bubble hits an enemy, the enemy ends up trapped inside the bubble and can no longer move except by floating. If you kick the enemy at this point, it starts ricocheting around the screen, finally stops somewhere and turns into fruit. Collecting the fruit isn't essential, but it earns you points. Squabbling over the points is the most fun part of the two-player version!
After playing for a while I noticed that you can jump on top of the bubbles. Because of this, two players get on better than one.
Every now and then special items appear on the screen, and collecting them leads to strange phenomena. You can, for example, skip five levels ahead or get extra omelettes to eat. If you hang about on one level for too long, along comes Baron von Blubba, who is a really nasty bug! The game has 100 levels, which means you'll still be blowing bubbles next month!
Once the game starts, the first thing that grabs your attention is the really humorous graphics. The dragons arrive on the scene inside a bubble, comically rolling their eyes. When you blow a bubble, the dragon opens its mouth and reveals its only tooth. At this point I nearly died laughing.
The program's technical execution is top class. What puzzles me most is that the bubbles are characters and not sprites. You can blow loads of them - even fill the whole screen! The dragons obediently do what the controls tell them. Bubble Bobble's playability is top class. The sound effects are the only minus for this amusing contraption - they really are only average.
