Bionic Commando

1988"Kyllä sokeakin softatalo jyvän löytää", toteaa vanha kansa tsekatessaan rupupeleistä tunnetun Go!:n uutukaista. Surullisen kuuluisan firman Bionic Commando onkin mainio peli.
Yllättävää ei pelin Commandon korkea taso ole, sillä pelin on kääntänyt Software Creations, Bubble Bobblella itsensä läpi lyönyt ryhmä.
Perusideahan on vanhempi kuin Mooseksen isä. Pelaajan on taisteltava tiensä läpi viiden kentän jotta maailma pelastuisi. Tehokkaampia aseita ja lisäbonuksia voi keräillä matkan varrelta.
Kuulostaa vanhalta ja väsyneeltä, mutta totuus on toinen. Pelaaja ei ole sidottu samaan kaavaan etenemisessä, vaan voi itse yrittää löytää optimaalisen reitin läpi korkei den kenttien. Varsinainen uutuus on kuuluisa bioninen käsivarsi. Tällä venyvällä ihmeraajalla voi kommando kiivetä, heilutella itseään Tarzan-tyyliin, kerätä extra-aseita ja tottakai mukiloida vihollisia.
Kuusnelosessa grafiikka on hyvää. Erinomainen animaatio (varsinkin käden kohdalla) ja huippuunsa hiottu pelattavuus todistavat huolellista koodausta. Ruutu vierii moitteettomasti ja taustamusiikki on erittäin hyvää. Negatiivista on lähinnä pakollinen multiload ja se, että kommandolla on vain neljä elämää, mikä tekee pelistä vaikeanpuoleisen.
Atari ST taas vilauttaa voimaansa loisteliaalla grafiikalla (etenkin taustat kakkostasosta eteenpäin), eikä push-scroll onnistu vähentämään pelattavuutta pätkääkään. Elämiä on jalomieliset kuusi. Ikävä, ettei taustamusiikkia voi vaihtaa ääniefekteihin. Tuleva Amiga-versio lienee identtinen, toivottavasti kuitenkin paremmalla scrollilla.
Kone kuin kone, Bionic Commando on todella esimerkillinen peli ja vahva ehdokas vuoden arcadekäännökseksi. Suositellaan ehdoitta.
1988"Even a blind software house finds a grain now and then," say the old folk as they check out the latest release from Go!, a label known for its junk games. And indeed the infamous firm's Bionic Commando is a splendid game.
The high standard of Commando is no surprise, though, since the game was converted by Software Creations, the team that made its breakthrough with Bubble Bobble.
The basic idea is older than Moses' father, of course. The player has to fight their way through five levels so that the world may be saved. More powerful weapons and extra bonuses can be picked up along the way.
Sounds old and tired, but the truth is different. The player isn't tied to one fixed pattern of progress, but can try to find the optimal route through the tall levels for themselves. The real novelty is the famous bionic arm. With this stretchy wonder-limb the commando can climb, swing about Tarzan-style, collect extra weapons and of course club the enemies senseless.
On the Commodore 64 the graphics are good. Excellent animation (especially on the arm) and playability honed to perfection testify to careful coding. The screen scrolls flawlessly and the background music is very good. The main negatives are the compulsory multiload and the fact that the commando has only four lives, which makes the game on the difficult side.
The Atari ST, for its part, flexes its muscles with splendid graphics (especially the backgrounds from level two onwards), and the push-scroll doesn't manage to take one bit away from the playability. Lives come in a magnanimous six. A pity that the background music can't be swapped for sound effects. The upcoming Amiga version will presumably be identical, though hopefully with better scrolling.
Whatever the machine, Bionic Commando is a truly exemplary game and a strong candidate for arcade conversion of the year. Recommended without reservation.
