Basil The Great Mouse Detective
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. 1988Basil Mestarietsivä on uusin Disneyn piirretyistä. Ja myös Gremlinin lisenssipeleistä.
Seuraa juonilyhennelmä:
Sherlock "John" Holmes asuu Baker Street 22B:ssä. Niin asuu myös Basil, hiirien holmes. Jyrsijäkonnista pahin, professori Rattigan, on kidnapannut Basilin kumppanin Dawsonin. Vain Basil voi estää Rattiganin suunnitelmat ja pelastaa kumppaninsa käyttämällä ilmiömäistä päättelykykyään. Itse asiassa "päättelykyky" on esine, jossa on varsi, piuha ja muutama tulitusnappula. Sitä käyttämällä ohjataan Basilia ympäri ruutuja, kerätään johtolankoja (kerää viisi ja pääset seuraavalle tasolle, siinä päättelykykyä). Jännityksen lisäämiseksi on osa johtolangoista vääriä. Lisäksi Basil voi kohentaa kuntoaan keräämällä juustoa ja Rattiganin runsaslukuiset apurit voi loukuttaa rotanloukkuihin.
Kuten edellisestä voi päätellä on Basil The Great Mouse Detective varsin tavanomainen peli. Basil kävelee, Basil hyppää, Basil kiipeää, Basil poimii esineitä... Syy tähän yksinkertaisuuteen on Gremlinin mukaan se, että Basil on suunnattu nuorille, erittäin nuorille pelaajille. Valitettavasti minulla ei ollut yhtään sellaista käsillä, joten heidän kantansa jää arvoitukseksi aina aikojen loppuun asti.
Grafiikka sinänsä on hyvin toteutettua niinkuin peli muutenkin, mutta jos ikää löytyy yli kymmenen vuoden maagisen rajan alkaa koko peli maistua nopeasti hiirenpapanoilta.
Samalla vaivalla olisi Basilista voinut vääntää laajempaan pohjaan vetoavan pelin. Ongelma on kuitenkin Gremlinin, ei minun.
1988Basil the Great Mouse Detective is the latest of the Disney cartoons. And also of Gremlin's licensed games.
A plot summary follows:
Sherlock "John" Holmes lives at 221B Baker Street. So does Basil, the holmes of mice. The worst of the rodent villains, Professor Rattigan, has kidnapped Basil's partner Dawson. Only Basil can foil Rattigan's plans and rescue his partner by using his phenomenal powers of deduction. Actually, the "powers of deduction" are an object with a stick, a lead and a few fire buttons. Using it, you steer Basil around the screens and collect clues (collect five and you get to the next level - there's deduction for you). To heighten the suspense, some of the clues are false. On top of that, Basil can build up his strength by collecting cheese, and Rattigan's numerous henchmen can be caught in rat traps.
As you can deduce from the above, Basil The Great Mouse Detective is a pretty run-of-the-mill game. Basil walks, Basil jumps, Basil climbs, Basil picks up objects... According to Gremlin, the reason for this simplicity is that Basil is aimed at young, very young players. Unfortunately I didn't have any of those to hand, so their view will remain a mystery until the end of time.
The graphics as such are well done, as is the rest of the game, but if you're past the magic age limit of ten, the whole thing soon starts to taste of mouse droppings.
With the same effort, Basil could have been hammered into a game with broader appeal. That's Gremlin's problem, though, not mine.
