Bard's Tale III: Thief of Fate

Joitain pieniä uudistuksia on tehty. Todella kovat taistelijat voivat ryhtyä Geomancereiksi, muutaman nastan taian hallitseviksi velhoiksi.

1988and it came to pass one day: the mad god Tarjan set his loathsome horde of monsters loose. Skara Brae was razed to the ground in a terrible bloodbath, and the once so proud Adventurers' Guild survived only in the form of a refugee camp. It was time to gather a plucky party, comb through the seven dimensions and snuff out Tarjan.

So once again you roam a three-dimensional world and fight nonstop against monsters that appear out of nowhere. If you manage to find the way into a dungeon, you get to roam three-dimensional corridors. And fight monsters that appear out of nowhere.

With Ultima V having vastly improved an already good game and Dungeonmaster having redefined the cutting edge of role-playing games, it was a sad discovery that the latest verse of the Bard's Ramblings is mostly the same old thing with a new serial number.

A few small changes have been made. Really tough fighters can become Geomancers, wizards who command a handful of nifty spells. There are small improvements to the combat, but otherwise BT III is identical to its predecessor. On the plus side, the disks have been left unprotected, so you can make your play disks in a jiffy without Electronic Arts' ultra-slow backup programs.

But, but: you can't rip your alter egos out of the Ultimas, only characters from the previous Bards will do. Even that beats starting from scratch.

The future lies with Dungeonmaster and the Ultimas, and with both of them coming to the Commodore 64, Bard's Tale is in far too tough company. Personally, I got bored pretty quickly. Then again, anyone who has generally been smitten with the Bard's Tales will surely like this one too, and the opening animation is as convincing as ever.
