Backlash
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Vanhana Emcounter-fanina sekosin riemusta pelattuani Backlashia muutaman minuutin.
Grafiikka on muutenkin todella uskomatonta.
Pelinäkin Backlash on huippu. Se on todella loistava ampumapeli, jota jaksaa mäiskiä tuntitolkulla kyllästymättä. Ainoa valittamisen aihe on tutka tähtäimen ympärillä. Siitä televisiossa vaikea saada selvää. Muuta vikaa ei etsimälläkään löydy.
Backlash on pakko-ostos jokaiselle 32-bittisen mikron omistajalle. Mikä parasta, Woakesin seuraava peli eli Damocles-Mercenary II tulee olemaan vielä vaikuttavampi. Tulevaisuus näyttää hyvältä.
1988Paul Woakes is an odd bird who reached demigod status after making only two games. Mercenary is a legend, but how many people remember Woakes's first game, the classic Encounter?
Backlash's full name is Backlash: Enocounter Mk II, which tells anyone familiar with Encounter what the name of the game ought to be. That is, an insanely fast, furious, three-dimensional mega-shoot-'em-up. And that's exactly what Backlash is. As an old Emcounter fan, I went crazy with delight after just a few minutes of playing Backlash.
Backlash is one of those rare games made for the super micros where you can tell the machine is being pushed to its absolute limits. In Backlash, for example, there can be dozens of moving objects on screen at once without the game slowing down one bit. The enemies are no longer simple geometric shapes but really good-looking ships with a metallic sheen, in some cases even animated. The graphics are truly unbelievable all round. Everything moves smoothly, fireball-like shots bounce across the terrain, objects grow and shrink without the slightest jerkiness, and the use of colour is exemplary. Every object, even if it's just a scrap of an explosion cloud, naturally has a shadow. Neither words nor pictures can do the graphics justice; you have to see it.
As a game, too, Backlash is top class. It's a truly brilliant shooter that you can keep blasting away at for hours on end without getting bored. The only thing to complain about is the radar around the gunsight. It's hard to make out on a television. Search as you might, you won't find any other fault.
Backlash is a must-buy for every owner of a 32-bit micro. Best of all, Woakes's next game, Damocles-Mercenary II, is going to be even more impressive. The future looks bright.
