Advanced Tactical Fighter
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews.
Grafiikka on kohtalaisen siedettävää, onhan vektorigrafiikalla muodostettu maisema aina kehumisen arvoinen.
1988Who still remembers a classic flight simulator called Fighter Pilot? It was buggy and not much to look at either, but funnily enough people played even that, for want of anything better. Digital Integration was the company behind FP. After years of wandering down the wrong path, putting out the likes of Tomahawk, TT Racer and Bobsleigh, DI has now returned to its roots by releasing Advanced Tactical Fighter.
But DI hasn't learned much over the years. Tomahawk challenged Gunship to a battle for supremacy among helicopter simulators and lost bitterly, and now ATF is crossing swords with Stealth Fighter, the subject this time being the fighter planes of the near future. After half an hour of test play the outcome is clear: another thrashing, and a decisive one.
The graphics are fairly tolerable; after all, a landscape built out of vector graphics is always worth praising. Speed is usually where the trouble lies, but ATF copes well with that too. Where it misfires, then, is playability - ATF hasn't got a scrap of it. Fumbling about with the joystick and the keyboard takes all the kick out of the game, and since the sound is the usual hissing typical of games like this, ATF can't hold your interest for more than a few goes.
