F16 Combat Pilot

1989 SyksyHauskaa! Taas uusi F-16-simulaattori turhien aggressioiden purkuun. Tällä kertaa on asialla Digital Integration. Pelin henki on yksinkertainen: lennä, tapa ja tule tapetuksi. Pelaaja aloittaa pelin tavallisena lentäjänä, joka on juuri saanut upouuden F-16C Falcon-hävittäjän alleen. Sillä lentsikalla sitten hortoillaan ympäri laajaa taistelualuetta ja pippuroidaan kaikki viholliseksi tunnistettavissa oleva ilmassa ja maassa liikkuva kalusto. Tottakai kaikki maalitaulut ampuvat takaisin.

1989 SyksyFun! Yet another F-16 simulator for venting pointless aggression. This time Digital Integration is behind it. The spirit of the game is simple: fly, kill and get killed. The player starts the game as an ordinary pilot who has just been handed a brand-new F-16C Falcon fighter. In that crate you then bumble around a wide combat area, peppering every piece of hardware moving in the air or on the ground that can be identified as hostile. Of course all the targets shoot back. The most spectacular parts of the whole game are the flights over the enemy's heavily defended headquarters, because that's when the enemy celebrates the F-16's visit in style with anti-aircraft shells popping in the air. Sometimes the odd anti-aircraft missile also wanders onto your tail, but you usually shake those off without any great trouble.

Then, when you get tired of the ordinary pilot's missions, all you need to do is complete five set missions and you get promoted to commander of the whole squadron. After that you and your squadron have to clear the game map of the tanks, factories, bridges, SAM batteries and other fun stuff that show up on it in a nasty shade of red.

Of course countless enemy planes (and missiles) try to stop this, but a squadron armed to the teeth has more firepower than the Luftwaffe had in total during the whole war, and a proper F-16 pilot knows how to fly loops around anti-aircraft missiles. Nor do you need to fear death, because even if the commander flies their plane into an enemy missile battery at, say, the speed of sound, all you lose is the aircraft - life goes on as if nothing had happened.

Combat Pilot can't be compared directly with Spectrum Holobyte's world-famous Falcon. Whereas Spectrum Holobyte's Falcon concentrates on simulating reality, Combat Pilot is more of an action simulator. The blasting is fun and the sound effects amusing. What also caused great bewilderment was that the enemy's guns don't do much damage to the F-16. Once I even managed to land at an airfield, even though a certain ill-tempered MiG-23 Flogger was pumping burst after burst into my bird. Admittedly, the HUD, the radar, the weapon systems and other nice things got busted in all the fun, but for some reason the MiG's guns simply didn't destroy my plane. A pilot buddy of mine remarked sourly on this that the makers of the game have evidently never seen the mess a Soviet bullet-hose makes.

Combat Pilot is addictive, though: a quick quarter-hour game stretched into six hours, and there's still no end in sight.
