Chuck Yeager's Advanced Flight Trainer 2.0

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Chuck Yeager's Advanced Flight Trainer 2.0

CYAFT 2.0 on simulaattori sanan varsinaisessa merkityksessä.

1989 SyksyCYAFT 2.0 is only for truly hardened simulator fans. Former F-19 and F-16 pilots needn't creep up on the game rubbing their hands, because at Chuck Yeager's insistence there is not ONE DROP of violence in the game. CYAFT is just a 'Trainer', as the name itself makes clear.

If there's no tight dogfighting and no tricky missions, what keeps your interest up? The programmer and Chuck Yeager have apparently figured that meticulous simulation of flying is enough. Alongside MicroSoft's Flight Simulator III, CYAFT is the only simulator in which aircraft behave exactly as they should.

If need be, the game can teach you to fly any of some twenty aircraft; you can also test your skills in air races, slaloms, canyons and formation flying.

As for different aircraft, CYAFT has just about everything possible, from First World War propeller planes all the way to the new X-29 experimental aircraft and the F-117 Stealth Fighter. There's even a space shuttle! As a small minus, let it be mentioned that the different-looking cockpits come in only three basic models. So the F-16 fighter and the space shuttle have the same controls and instruments. The game also has an automatic camera mode, which records your flight in the machine's memory for as long as your computer has free memory left. Afterwards you can watch your flight from absolutely any angle.

Although all this may well sound great, messing about with the game comes down to taking off and wriggling around in the game's small universe. At first, at least. After a while you notice how much fun flying really is, even without MiGs on your tail. The flight lessons, formation flights and air races, with their dozens of possible viewing angles, keep your interest up for a surprisingly long time.

On a PC fitted with an EGA display you can choose a resolution of 640/350, which gives really sharp definition. The game naturally slows down visibly, but if the speed isn't enough, you can choose a lower resolution, which speeds things up. And as I said, you can peer at your own plane from absolutely any angle during the flight.

Since this is a game done in vector graphics, a lot is demanded of the computer before the horizon tilts smoothly and realistically. As for the sound side, it's best not to say much of anything.

CYAFT 2.0 is a simulator in the true sense of the word. Without combat, though, it's boring as hell in the long run. Luckily Chuck Yeager's Advanced Flight Simulator, made with the same technology, is on its way, and that one at least has combat.
