Academy

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Academy

Jokaisen liiturikuski koulutetaan Gal-Corpin liituripilotti-akatemiassa (Galcorp Academy for Skimmer Pilots eli GASP!), sillä liituri on kallis peli eikä sitä sovi antaa jokaisen rähmäkäpylän käteen. Kunnon pilotin täytyy selvitä 20 tehtävästä ennenkuin koulutus on ohi.

Nämä kaksikymmentä tehtävää on jaettu neljän ryhmiin. Jokainen ryhmä täytyy selvittää yli 90-prosenttisesti pisteillä ennenkuin pääsee yrittämään seuraavaa. Erityyppisillä planeetoilla suoritettavissa tehtävissä on tarpeeksi vaihtelua, joten ikävystyminen on kirjaimellisesti valovuosien päässä.

Jostain on aina tingittävä.

Grafiikka on kolmiulotteista ja vuorokaudenajan mukaan varjostettua. Tau Cetista tuttujen rakennusten ja vihollisten lisäksi uusia on tullut parikymmentä lisää. Liituripuolen ainoa uudistus on tehokkaat DeLay-pommit.

Suositellaan varauksitta kaikissa olomuodoissaan!

1988A year or two ago CRL released a game called Tau Ceti, which was, is and always will be an excellent cross between an adventure game and a simulator. And now this brilliant creation of Pete Cooke's has got a sequel.

Skimmers play the lead role in this game too. Every skimmer driver is trained at Gal-Corp's skimmer pilot academy (Galcorp Academy for Skimmer Pilots, or GASP!), because a skimmer is an expensive bit of kit and you don't just hand one over to any old butterfingers. A proper pilot has to get through 20 missions before the training is over.

These twenty missions are split into groups of four. Each group has to be cleared with a score of over 90 per cent before you get to try the next one. The missions, flown on planets of different types, have enough variety that boredom is literally light years away.

And can this really be true: if none of the standard skimmers satisfies you, you can design your own, right down to the instrument panel. The equipment includes all the familiar lasers, missiles, flares, infrared displays etc etc. The only limits are money and the weight of the equipment. Admittedly, though, you can't design a contraption to match the Tau Ceti skimmer however much you weep. Something always has to give.

The graphics are three-dimensional and shaded according to the time of day. On top of the buildings and enemies familiar from Tau Ceti, there are some twenty new ones. The only innovation on the skimmer side is the powerful DeLay bombs.

There's action aplenty. Lasers flicker, missiles and anti-missiles zip about and, as a good game should, Academy sucks the poor player deep into its world. So much for the praise - now for the slating.

The ST version uses about 10 per cent of the machine's capacity, the graphics are primitive and the sound is poor. There are no pictures of the nuclear power stations and the other places you can dock at, and the exterior graphics could have been done better too. At least it's fast, thank the Lord. So what are you left with? If more sweat and effort had gone into the implementation, the end result would have been one of the two or three hottest megagames in the world.

As it stands, my verdict on Academy is: my god, I love it! Despite everything, Academy is an excellent game and one of the few games I'd take with me to a desert island. Recommended without reservation in all its incarnations!
